Low temperature was around -11 C, but it warmed a little second half. Seeing was initially bad with Tspec (and I failed to record it), but improved to moderate by the end of twilight. A few high clouds during second half did not impede observing very much. The Tspec observer had trouble with centerup but not with guiding, which seemed very strange. When ARCTIC was mounted, the filter wheel got into a bad state, possibly because of the user asking for a filter change while it was still homing, or possibly the home just failed. In any case, I had to restart the filter wheel control software in order to get it out of the confused state, and after that it did home successfully. I was watching for the ARCTIC shutter to fail in the deep cold, but it was okay and instead we had trouble with the diffuser not rotating even though it said it was. This was apparent from the diffuser's diffraction spikes. We could get the spikes to shift a bit, but couldn't get the rotation to work consistently. The observers opted for defocused observing instead of the diffuser. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- FAILURE MODE TIME PROG INSTR TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UW01 R I/H 20:29 20:39 ARCTIC FW needed reset ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21:19 arctic 361( 18) 33 57 10.0 -9.1 -8.9 -9.4 -9.5 sdss_g 1.54 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 4 89 (E) 645 clear none 17:00 5 331 (NNW) 637 clear none 18:00 14 11 (N) 842 clear none 19:00 7 63 (ENE) 604 clear none 20:00 10 11 (N) 563 clear none 21:00 2 269 (W) 512 clear none 22:00 6 342 (NNW) 509 clear none 23:00 6 343 (NNW) 528 clear none 00:00 6 353 (N) 559 clear none 01:00 8 345 (NNW) 591 clear none 02:00 11 7 (N) 494 clear none 03:00 11 16 (NNE) 347 mstly clr none 04:00 12 25 (NNE) 404 ptly cldy none 05:00 17 68 (ENE) 531 mstly clr none 06:00 16 63 (ENE) 582 mstly clr none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
