A few hours later the clouds improved and then the radar improved, but it remained humid until after midnight. Once humidity dropped, I spent a while trying to make sure snow blowing off the dome would not be a problem, while also cooling the primary mirror just in case. Finally I thought it was safe enough to open... and the wind immediately increased again. We were able to keep observing while pointed toward the wind, though. The kcam shutter had some problems, which improved after it got exercised for a few minutes, and then got worse again later as the dome got colder. I focused on KOSMOS in imaging mode, and we prepared to do target acquisition in imaging mode if needed - but we were able to acquire with the slitviewer and then use the NA2 guider for backup guiding when the shutter got flakier. The altitude brake also objected to the cold in the evening, hissing without end. But when I parked in the morning it was able to clamp properly so I didn't have to park at a different altitude. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- FAILURE MODE TIME PROG INSTR TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 02:53 kosmos 250( 291) 106 67 -3.4 -3.3 -2.4 -3.5 -3.5 - 1.20 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 37 21 5 208 (SSW) 1019 cloudy lt snow 17:00 31 24 6 264 (W) 994 cloudy lt snow 18:00 29 24 8 278 (W) 1172 ptly cldy lt snow 19:00 28 23 16 291 (WNW) ptly cldy lt snow 20:00 25 24 7 355 (N) mstly clr humid 21:00 24 24 6 343 (NNW) mstly clr humid 22:00 26 24 9 346 (NNW) clear humid 23:00 25 24 14 3 (N) clear humid 00:00 24 22 22 20 (NNE) clear humid 01:00 26 19 24 15 (NNE) clear none 02:00 25 19 22 21 (NNE) clear none 03:00 25 13 22 33 (NNE) 271 clear none 04:00 27 8 16 24 (NNE) 290 clear none 05:00 27 9 23 17 (NNE) 314 clear none 06:00 29 2 8 0 (N) 194 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
