During first half we were able to stay open, but had to abandon the first-choice target when it tracked too close to the wind direction. There was an altitude overcurrent, but that occurred while I was moving the telescope away from the wind. Right around the program changeover, the wind shifted, the dust spiked, and we smelled smoke (presumably from a fire north of Ruidoso). The Sloanies also thought there was pollen, but I was more skeptical. The observers were able to catch the ingress portion of a transit before I accepted that we were having a pollen event despite quite chilly temperatures. We closed for a few hours, until the wind and dust dropped and my car windshield didn't look so bad. As soon as I opened there was another wind gust. We were able to stay away from the wind for a little while, until the gusts got worse and I decided it was time to close and park. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- FAILURE MODE TIME PROG INSTR TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:46 ecamera 477( 56) 253 36 13.9 15.1 15.6 14.7 14.1 Clr 1.63 00:20 arctic 519( 1006) 109 34 10.8 11.0 11.8 10.7 10.6 sdss_g 1.98 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 68 34 27 233 (SW) 1420 clear none 17:00 65 34 30 255 (WSW) 1653 clear none 18:00 64 35 30 264 (W) 1834 clear none 19:00 63 26 32 259 (W) 2022 clear none 20:00 59 22 22 279 (W) 2174 clear none 21:00 56 21 18 253 (WSW) 1778 clear none 22:00 55 24 29 256 (WSW) 1579 clear none 23:00 54 24 27 274 (W) 1609 clear none 00:00 51 22 28 293 (WNW) 2238 mstly clr dust 01:00 46 8 22 2 (N) 4923 mstly clr none 02:00 43 -1 15 8 (N) 2644 mstly clr none 03:00 41 -3 23 10 (N) 1527 mstly clr none 04:00 39 -5 23 11 (N) 661 mstly clr none 05:00 40 -4 21 18 (NNE) 415 mstly clr none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
