WE'RE BACK!! And it was a good night, all things considered. We were able to conduct our first pre-trainig Zoom session with JHU, they did great! Storms were building in the afternoon, as they are want to do this time of year. I thought we'd be able to grab some sky flats in time but, alas, just as we started the exposures the clouds rolled in. We tried the new Arctic sky flat script but weren't able to get it to work. Then the radar became too close for comfort and we closed without being able to take cals or science, so I marked it down as loss to weather. The wind gusted over 35 mph a little after 21:00 with some dust spikes and rain. Things started clearing up and was safe to reopen at midnight. After all that, the seeing became *unbelievably* good. I thought I forgot to take binning into account but, nope, we made it down to 0.57"! The seeing was so good that we had to defocus slightly so as not to saturate. We were able to stay open until dawn with no further issues, which was surprising given the number of moths... No problems tonight. ------------ Since this is my first nightlog in over two months I pondered what song would be the best to celebrate. Should I riff out Aerosmith? Belt out Aretha? Roll like the Stones? In the end, I thought Styx might be best, given we've crossed the river from closed back to open. So, without further ado: I'm sleeeewing awaaaaay Set an open course for a galaxy 'Cause we're finally free Free to face the sky that's ahead of me On Zoom I'm the captain So sign aboard We'll help Colorado With every chore and I'll try Oh Lord I'll try To coffee on IIIIIIII feel so carefree Transmissions of the waves spark the CCD So happy, not sad I think of narrowband lens and the beams they have We slew happily forever So the story goes But somehow we missed out On that clouds that roll But we'll try best that we can To carry on A gathering of storm clouds Appeared above my head They sang to me this song of nope And this is what they said They said, "Gray close away, Gray close away Gray close away" with glee "Go blow away, go blow away go blow away," said me "Please go away, please go away please go away" plead we "Please go away, please go away please go away" plead we I thought it must be angels Cuz to our surprise We cried aloud a big, "Yip! It's Sub-arcsecond skies!!" Singing, "come slew away, come slew away Come slew away with me (lads) Come slew away, come slew away Come slew away with me Moths sail away, moths sail away Moths sail away from me Moths sail away, moths sail away Moths sail away from me" ------- FAILURE LOG ------- FAILURE MODE TIME PROG INSTR TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 00:21 arctic 423( 1239) 153 61 19.2 18.4 19.3 18.2 18.4 sdss-i 1.10 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 79 37 11 272 (W) 387 mstly clr none 17:00 76 36 13 268 (W) 314 mstly clr none 18:00 74 33 13 299 (WNW) 329 ptly cldy none 19:00 71 34 8 268 (W) 326 mstly cldy none 20:00 67 34 5 262 (W) 347 cloudy none 21:00 66 34 1 302 (WNW) 329 cloudy lt rain 22:00 62 36 19 357 (N) 6144 cloudy lt rain 23:00 65 31 10 37 (NE) 270 ptly cldy none 00:00 66 32 3 51 (NE) 420 ptly cldy none 01:00 66 33 5 283 (WNW) 378 clear none 02:00 65 33 3 268 (W) 361 clear none 03:00 64 33 5 266 (W) 418 clear none 04:00 64 35 3 234 (SW) 475 clear none 05:00 63 36 2 247 (WSW) 560 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
