While it wasn't as cold as yesterday and we didn't have any mirror or shutter issues, it was cloudy with poor seeing. We were able to punch through the clouds but I think we all felt like we were given a bit of coal from Krampus tonight instead of data presents from Santa. ARCSAT was misbehaving and deserved a Christmas switching. However, everything was sorted out (a couple reboots were needed). Given the truss lamp issue I don't think I can say no problems tonight. ---------- If you've never heard the story of Krampus, you should check it out. Let me tell you of the time he visited APO... Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the site, Not an obs spec was working, not even a byte. Our bootheels were slung on the counters with dare, It’s not like St. Nicholas soon would be there. Like children we nestled all snug in our chairs, While visions of cloudy skies danced in our heads. And Sloanies in their 'kerchief, and I lying flat, Had just settled our brains for a short winter's nap. When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter, I sprang from the floor to see what was the matter. Away to the window I flew like a flash, Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash. The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow, Gave a lustre of midday to objects below, When what to my horrified eyes did appear, But a massive beast, not eight tiny rein-deer! With a pointed whipped tail so lively and quick, I knew in a moment this was not St. Nick. More rapid than eagles his curses they came, As he whistled, and shouted, and called us by name: "Now, Vickor! now, Christian! now Candace, you villan! So careless and stupid! Such slackers, so sloven! >From the top of the porch! to the top of the wall! I’ll whip away! whip away! whip away all!" As leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, When they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky, So up to the dometop the nightmare he flew, with a ruckus loud noise, and a whipping stick too! And then with a shudder, I heard on the roof The clapping and tramping of each cloven hoof. As I drew in my head, and was turning around Down the arcade Krampus came with a bound. He was covered all in fur, from his head to his foot And his clothes were all tarnished with ashes and soot A bundle employed he had flung on his back And he looked like a pedler just opening his pack. His eyes like hot embers! his forked tongue, how scary! His horns curved like talons, his teeth made me weary! His droll little mouth was drawn down in a sneer And the beard on his chin came to a point quite severe. The fork of his tongue he held tight in his teeth, And the snow, it encircled his head like a wreath, He had a gaunt face and a breath that was smelly, He shook when he laughed, like a mad Machiavelli. He was haggard and lean, a right creepy non-elf, And I shook when I saw him, in spite of myself. A squint of his eye and a tilt of his head, Soon gave me to know we had something to dread. He spoke not a word, but went straight to his work, And switched all our bottoms; punishment for our shirk. When staying this flogging, only he knows, Not sparing the rod, up the blisters they rose. He stayed to his work til the clock gave a whistle, Then away his hooves flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he dashed out of sight "Happy Christmas to all...NOW GET BACK TO WORK!!" No obs specs were harmed in the making of the parody. All Obs Specs worked very hard tonight. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- FAILURE MODE TIME PROG INSTR TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21:15 ecamera 511( -550) 90 48 2.1 1.7 2.6 1.9 2.0 Clear 1.84 00:19 arctic 529( 546) 292 22 1.8 0.7 1.5 0.8 1.4 sdss-r 1.66 03:54 dcamera 518( 303) 29 40 0.2 0.0 0.5 0.0 0.4 -- 1.78 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 37 -7 1 339 (NNW) mstly cldy none 17:00 36 -7 9 20 (NNE) mstly cldy none 18:00 35 -7 1 240 (WSW) mstly cldy none 19:00 38 -5 6 0 (N) mstly cldy none 20:00 39 -6 1 153 (SSE) mstly cldy none 21:00 36 -8 2 197 (SSW) mstly cldy none 22:00 35 -7 2 178 (S) mstly cldy none 23:00 34 -6 9 90 (E) mstly cldy none 00:00 35 -4 16 127 (SE) mstly cldy none 01:00 33 -4 12 115 (ESE) mstly cldy none 02:00 32 -2 19 125 (SE) mstly cldy none 03:00 33 -1 15 124 (SE) mstly cldy none 04:00 32 -2 18 143 (SE) ptly cldy none 05:00 33 -7 12 143 (SE) mstly clr none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
