Although it stopped falling by sunset and there wasn't too much accumulation on dome roofs, the humidity remained high for hours. When the wind picked up, the humidity dropped, so I tested the blowing snow with the dome closed before deciding we could open and point away from the wind. While we were closed I was waking up some things that were still asleep, and checking on DIS focus (excellent on blue, needs work on red which will be on tomorrow night's engineering list) and the arctic shutter, which is sensitive to cold (it failed once dome temps were below -10 C). After we opened, I took half an hour to do quick checks of pointing (good with NA2, needed correction with echelle) and collimation (poor but not awful, consistent with telescope out of equilibrium but mirrors behaving correctly), then I handed the telescope over for science. We did have some thin clouds for much of the night and an increase in humidity again towards dawn, but we were able to observe for the rest of the night. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- FAILURE MODE TIME PROG INSTR TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 22:42 ecamera 278(-1349) -34 72 -12.6 -10.0 -7.9 -10.6 -11.8 ND1 2.86 01:19 ecamera 544(-1109) 61 43 -9.9 -11.0 -10.2 -10.9 -10.0 ND1 2.70 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 15 10 10 47 (NE) cloudy snow 17:00 14 11 9 65 (ENE) cloudy lt snow 18:00 13 11 15 64 (ENE) ptly cldy humid 19:00 12 11 10 74 (ENE) mstly clr humid 20:00 11 8 13 52 (NE) mstly clr humid 21:00 10 3 24 68 (ENE) clear none 22:00 9 1 28 70 (ENE) clear none 23:00 11 2 24 66 (ENE) clear none 00:00 13 1 22 55 (NE) 182 mstly clr none 01:00 15 1 12 36 (NE) 168 mstly clr none 02:00 14 3 18 64 (ENE) 179 mstly clr none 03:00 13 3 27 65 (ENE) 196 clear none 04:00 12 3 22 68 (ENE) 230 mstly clr none 05:00 11 3 16 76 (ENE) 256 mstly clr none 06:00 10 4 28 67 (ENE) mstly clr humid Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
