Things cleared up really fast but, sadly, the seeing was horrible all night especially when the wind shifted east. The OU06 had their first night of training. J.Derkacy led the newbies and they did so well that I think I only talked to them once during their observations! While everything was good during check out, I noticed that the azimuth showed a lot of variation when we went to our first target. I tried to run a long slew and, interestingly, there was an altitude motion error and I had to release the intermediate break. The azimuth motion was still present in the error strip chart after releasing the brea so I restarted the drives. It continued to be present but everything seemed to be moving without issue. I listened on the intermediate level intercom and there were never any odd noises and I had cleaned down the drives and there was nothing on them. The oscillations looked a bit like a sawtooth with ~2” amplitude variations in the error chart. Russet said she was seeing similar issues so we started taking note of az, alt positions and from which direction we slewed (Cw or CCW). The results are listed below. bad at 191, 45 bad at 285, 51 noraml at 271, 40 slew CCW (West to North) bad at 238.8, 62.2 slew CCW (N to E) bad at 98, 65 slew CW (E to N) bad at 82, 25 slew CW move (E to N) good at 167, 52 but then became bad as we moved and tracked through to 173 switch to echelle move CW, (North through west to South) bad at 316, 38 became good over time moved CCW (W to N ) bad at 207, 49 CCW from (W to E) bad at 172, 69 ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- OU06 D T/U 19:56 20:30 Strange Azimuth oscillations ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:23 dcamera 502( 802) 191 46 8.1 11.5 11.7 11.1 8.6 -- 1.85 20:11 dcamera 414( 609) 194 36 7.2 9.3 9.8 8.8 7.5 -- 1.63 22:02 dcamera 502( 557) 271 39 6.6 6.6 7.4 6.4 6.4 -- 1.56 00:16 ecamera 377( -471) 329 44 6.1 5.7 6.4 5.7 5.8 ND1 2.03 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 57 16 10 258 (WSW) 1093 ptly cldy none 17:00 56 12 9 240 (WSW) 1127 ptly cldy none 18:00 58 13 9 300 (WNW) 1131 ptly cldy none 19:00 53 11 9 247 (WSW) 1039 ptly cldy none 20:00 48 23 4 98 (E) 505 mstly clr none 21:00 45 22 12 86 (E) 595 clear none 22:00 45 22 13 86 (E) 633 clear none 23:00 44 21 14 88 (E) 763 clear none 00:00 43 20 15 83 (E) 804 clear none 01:00 43 19 12 81 (E) 864 clear none 02:00 43 18 15 80 (E) 773 clear none 03:00 42 19 12 84 (E) 805 clear none 04:00 44 18 8 58 (ENE) 767 clear none 05:00 43 15 5 352 (N) 822 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
