Our first major winter cold front tonight. I noticed a dropped quad on ARCTIC around 21:00 while doing some shutter tests. It was fine at checkout. At 00:00 we discovered that the arctic shutter was stuck. We reset it and Russet changed some parameters but in the end we could not get it to reliably work at -10.6C tonight. The observers choose to use DIS in imaging mode as an alternative , which I then needed to mount and set up for them. We lost about 1 hrs trying to get the shutter to work in the cold weather, but to no avail. We also notice we were getting an oval image instead of a round image for the new VR filter. When I took the instrument off the filter was positioned properly so I am not sure of the odd image shape we were seeing. On a positive note, we had no problems with the secondary tonight, so the fix that was implemented for the cold weather tonight seemed to do the trick for the cold weather. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CU03 R I/H 00:10 06:23 Too cold (-10.6C) for arctic shutter to work. ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:10 TSPEC 980 Ks 1.93 01:15 red_dis 755( -98) -59 40 -10.8 -11.1 -10.4 -11.0 -10.8 Gunn-r 1.95 01:23 NA2gdr 2720(24720) 56 72 -10.7 -11.2 -10.4 -11.0 -10.8 R 1.95 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 11 5 23 70 (ENE) mstly cldy humid 17:00 9 5 22 66 (ENE) ptly cldy humid 18:00 7 4 25 54 (NE) ptly cldy none 19:00 7 3 21 74 (ENE) mstly clr none 20:00 10 1 17 38 (NE) clear none 21:00 12 -3 15 32 (NNE) 36 clear none 22:00 13 -4 15 29 (NNE) 38 clear none 23:00 12 -5 10 25 (NNE) 47 clear none 00:00 13 -3 14 22 (NNE) 42 clear none 01:00 14 -5 16 42 (NE) 52 clear none 02:00 12 -3 13 55 (NE) 57 clear none 03:00 12 -5 7 61 (ENE) 50 clear none 04:00 13 -4 20 43 (NE) 48 clear none 05:00 13 -3 17 35 (NE) 58 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
