By mid-afternoon the sky was clear, but energetic winds were blowing the snow around, even up to telescope height. Also during the day there was some trouble with some of our servers which needed to be rebooted. This resulted in several minor problems, including that I didn't receive Bill's email saying not to open tonight until I had already told observers that we could open IF the wind dropped below 20 mph. First half, the wind stayed high and I ran around working on other issues resulting from the reboots. Once the wind got below 30 mph I did some snow removal and re-assessed conditions and believed it would be safe at 20 mph. Wind got a little lower and we opened the cloudcam, then it got gusty again. Finally it reached my limit after 4 am and I was able to open. There was some trouble with the very first slew which might have been due to crazy temperature swings or wind pushing the dome while closed, but after that the telescope settled down and worked normally. We were able to check out SurveyCam on ARCSAT and both pointing and focus seem okay, but it has a new mysterious bad row right in the middle of the chip. Maybe it's a ringer? We won't have an answer about throughput for a little while, though. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- WY03 D T/H 04:30 04:38 motion err/runaway/collision on az ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 04:43 dcamera 468( 23) 189 80 -1.1 -2.7 -2.6 -2.4 -1.2 - 1.88 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 17 4 3 272 (W) 2654 clear lt snow 17:00 17 4 22 9 (N) 694 clear lt snow 18:00 19 2 24 7 (N) 1603 clear lt snow 19:00 20 7 28 10 (N) 2240 clear lt snow 20:00 22 6 21 29 (NNE) 639 clear lt snow 21:00 22 5 26 26 (NNE) 526 clear none 22:00 24 2 21 20 (NNE) 450 clear none 23:00 23 4 20 8 (N) 463 clear none 00:00 26 1 21 39 (NE) 522 clear none 01:00 30 -2 13 22 (NNE) 646 clear none 02:00 28 -1 21 14 (NNE) 927 clear none 03:00 29 0 17 12 (NNE) 1418 clear none 04:00 32 -1 22 344 (NNW) 1198 clear none 05:00 28 -1 12 8 (N) 1435 clear none 06:00 27 0 10 334 (NNW) 1582 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
