We had some hard rain this afternoon and the moths retreated into the building to seek shelter. The dome was swimming in them. I was sure there would be a drive incident and I was not disappointed. On the very first slew, a moth became jammed into the alt drive. It was so well stuck to one of the drive wheels that the telescope made an immediate Motion Error stop. Only with a q-tip and a lot of patience was I able to clean the tiny reachable area on the wheel. It took an hour of small slews and cleaning before I was able to get the telescope to the point where it didn't constantly slip with alt motion. The ecam filter wheel became stuck (only part of the ecam image was visible or there was scattered light observed on one half of the image). I didn't realize what the problem was immediately because I hadn't seen this happen before but after a few filter changed it corrected itself. I was moving between ND1 and clear. Thankfully, we had good seeing and no more rain or moth incidents after sunset. I cleaned the alt drives again at dawn and it was still mothy but looking better. There was a miscommunication between our B-half observers and they started about 30min late but our A half observer was able to use the time. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UW06 E T/H 21:42 22:51 Moth in Alt drive UW06 E T/H 23:21 23:27 ecam filter stuck ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 22:01 ecamera 937( 167) -7 48 14.1 15.1 16.7 14.8 14.4 ND1 1.21 00:50 ecamera 1098( 207) 157 82 12.5 13.1 15.4 13.1 12.8 clear 1.19 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 64 48 7 197 (SSW) 889 cloudy lt rain 17:00 66 48 12 212 (SSW) 851 mstly cldy lt rain 18:00 63 48 9 183 (S) 827 mstly cldy rain 19:00 59 50 11 159 (SSE) 950 mstly cldy rain 20:00 60 48 13 129 (SE) 891 ptly cldy none 21:00 59 48 17 126 (SE) 880 mstly clr none 22:00 58 48 20 132 (SE) 909 mstly clr none 23:00 57 47 25 133 (SE) 1030 mstly clr none 00:00 56 47 19 124 (SE) 1074 mstly clr none 01:00 56 44 17 120 (ESE) 979 mstly clr none 02:00 54 45 25 128 (SE) 892 ptly cldy none 03:00 54 47 20 124 (SE) 826 mstly cldy none 04:00 54 48 21 125 (SE) 810 mstly cldy none 05:00 54 47 17 134 (SE) 787 mstly cldy none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
