Seeing was mediocre, with wind from the east, but it wasn't awful. The first half observer had only one target which was going to be in the zone of avoidance for his last scheduled hour, so we arranged to let the second program take over early. With a couple of traps and a vacuum cleaner, I removed about a kilomoth from the dome and the ops building, but it wasn't enough. Near morning twilight, the telescope started slipping in altitude. I was confused because the problem wasn't reflected in the altitude "error" telemetry, but the axis controller did throw a flag for "Slip detected." The first two times it recovered tracking on its own, but after the third incident I stopped and cleaned moth guts off the altitude drive, and after that the telescope behaved well. This promises to be an exceptional moth season so we may see more such incidents in the next few months. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NM07 E T/H 04:18 04:29 Moth guts on alt drive ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:48 NICFPS 636( 1541) 101 47 16.3 17.6 18.4 17.1 16.7 Y 1.92 21:17 NICFPS 796( 1645) 99 53 15.8 16.6 17.3 16.2 16.0 H 1.57 00:07 ecamera 616( -216) 40 50 14.4 14.0 14.5 13.9 14.1 ND2 1.44 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 70 33 6 215 (SW) 1025 mstly cldy none 17:00 71 34 8 231 (SW) 983 mstly cldy none 18:00 67 44 9 218 (SW) 3372 ptly cldy none 19:00 65 43 17 130 (SE) 2469 ptly cldy none 20:00 63 42 16 117 (ESE) 1722 ptly cldy none 21:00 61 39 17 88 (E) 1310 mstly clr none 22:00 59 41 13 86 (E) 1226 ptly cldy none 23:00 57 43 10 88 (E) 1192 ptly cldy none 00:00 58 36 11 131 (SE) 1284 ptly cldy none 01:00 59 31 12 87 (E) 1153 mstly clr none 02:00 57 31 11 94 (E) 1283 clear none 03:00 60 31 12 93 (E) 1135 clear none 04:00 58 31 14 81 (E) 1118 clear none 05:00 58 31 9 76 (ENE) 1072 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
