Several obs specs have reported seeing orbs on their dome floor IR cameras. Others admit to feeling fingers in their hair and flutterings on their skin in the dark. Are these the malevolent spirits of those observers lost to the threat of rain or something more...sinister? Spoiler: Moths. It was moths. They're all over the dome and attacking the IR camera! They must be celebrating the perfectly clear skies, calm wind, low dust, and good seeing we had all night. I will admit to jumping a few times when they hit the camera... No problems tonight. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:46 NICFPS 634( 1615) 103 42 16.4 19.0 18.5 18.6 17.5 MK-H 1.27 20:38 NICFPS 474( 1373) 98 53 15.0 17.4 17.4 16.8 16.2 MK-J 1.03 23:24 arctic 459( 893) 166 67 16.6 15.4 15.9 15.1 15.2 SDSS-r 1.09 01:31 dcamera 388( 683) 253 34 15.8 15.2 15.6 15.0 15.3 -- 1.29 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 68 22 17 269 (W) 490 clear none 17:00 69 22 13 244 (WSW) 511 clear none 18:00 68 22 12 272 (W) 446 clear none 19:00 66 20 12 264 (W) 455 clear none 20:00 63 18 8 256 (WSW) 534 clear none 21:00 61 17 10 243 (WSW) 635 clear none 22:00 59 17 9 260 (W) 553 clear none 23:00 61 18 11 246 (WSW) 635 clear none 00:00 60 18 8 252 (WSW) 624 clear none 01:00 61 18 9 263 (W) 683 clear none 02:00 59 16 8 263 (W) 614 clear none 03:00 60 17 7 278 (W) 574 clear none 04:00 61 17 5 265 (W) 531 clear none 05:00 60 17 8 260 (W) 538 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
