The sky was clear from mid-evening but humidity remained high until about 2 am. When the humidity dropped I repeated my assessment of the dome, but I just didn't think it was safe. There was snow and ice on the roof, ice on the dome shutter rails, and the primary mirror was warm enough to melt anything that might fall on it. I ran the fans for a while but the primary barely made it below freezing so I still did not feel safe opening. Sloan and ARCSAT were able to open so it was even more disappointing. But the wind was from the east so I assume seeing was bad. I checked DIS spectrograph focus (unchanged), analyzed the data from Thursday night's engineering, and worked on the schedule. I parked the telescope facing south, so the dome rails should be clear by next sunset. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 31 30 2 206 (SSW) mstly cldy fog 17:00 31 31 7 81 (E) mstly cldy fog 18:00 31 31 9 359 (N) ptly cldy fog 19:00 30 30 6 8 (N) mstly clr humid 20:00 30 30 13 35 (NE) clear humid 21:00 29 28 6 11 (N) clear humid 22:00 28 28 14 17 (NNE) clear humid 23:00 28 27 12 47 (NE) clear humid 00:00 27 25 16 25 (NNE) clear humid 01:00 28 24 17 42 (NE) clear humid 02:00 28 25 8 121 (ESE) clear none 03:00 29 23 16 72 (ENE) clear none 04:00 30 14 16 55 (NE) 223 clear none 05:00 30 14 11 46 (NE) 278 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
