Then I did instrument blocks with ARCTIC and NA2 guider through heavy clouds (I was observing a 2nd magnitude star with no filter for a while). I closed after the instrument blocks, and then humidity went up for a while. Everything outside frosted over. While closed, I worked on DIS spectrograph focus, which needed to be adjusted due to the recent cold snap. I was cautious when humidity dropped, but I decided it really was stable about an hour before twilight and tried to set up for some ARCTIC tracking tests to see if the instrument blocks helped. Instead I found a problem with ARCTIC itself and spent some time trying to characterize it. We know one way to fix this problem, but we would like to find a better way, so I didn't do anything drastic. I left ARCTIC in a bad state for Bill to work with during the day. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:50 arctic 889( 772) -14 52 2.0 4.5 3.8 4.4 3.8 - 1.51 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 40 33 6 251 (WSW) 227 mstly cldy none 17:00 36 34 4 235 (SW) mstly cldy humid 18:00 35 29 2 189 (S) mstly cldy none 19:00 35 29 8 181 (S) 305 mstly cldy none 20:00 36 28 10 139 (SE) 372 mstly cldy none 21:00 35 31 11 134 (SE) ptly cldy none 22:00 35 28 1 179 (S) ptly cldy humid 23:00 34 31 2 190 (S) ptly cldy humid 00:00 33 31 5 186 (S) mstly clr humid 01:00 33 31 5 190 (S) mstly clr humid 02:00 33 32 1 217 (SW) mstly clr humid 03:00 34 29 6 26 (NNE) mstly clr none 04:00 33 27 7 20 (NNE) mstly clr none 05:00 33 26 11 40 (NE) 307 mstly clr none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
