The clouds roll in (though seeing was good while the clouds weren't thick) and things start looking questionable, but we still try to muster on. Then, out of nowhere, Mothra! A moth completely covered the echelle slit viewer and I wasn't able to see any stars for my JH01 observer. I tried fishing it out of the instrument but the moths I extracted were not the dreaded Monthra and no light could pierce his horrid, terror-inducing body. I spent over an hour trying to find it or get him to move with no luck. As the clouds were getting thick int the west, I decided to close the dome and turn on the dome lights in hopes of luring the monster out. No such luck. However, shortly after closing, rain exploded from the south with no radar warning and both Sloan and I were caught off guard! If it weren't for the mighty Mothra, we would have been attacked by Rainzilla's wrath. We remained closed the rest of the night due to clouds and rain. Mothra continues to roost in the slitviewer. Tspec took good images all night but the temp of the AUX tank did increase while the instrument was right-side up. Around 4am I inverted it and the temperatures started to come down. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- JH01 E I/H 01:16 02:20 moth blocking slitviewer ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:10 ecamera 889( 122) 180 76 13.3 15.3 14.9 14.9 14.2 -- 0.95 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 63 30 12 238 (WSW) 411 ptly cldy none 17:00 62 31 7 225 (SW) 481 ptly cldy none 18:00 59 29 10 185 (S) 489 ptly cldy none 19:00 55 27 8 185 (S) 495 ptly cldy none 20:00 56 27 10 188 (S) 594 ptly cldy none 21:00 56 30 11 182 (S) 702 ptly cldy none 22:00 56 31 17 173 (S) 860 mstly cldy none 23:00 56 32 21 190 (S) 656 mstly cldy none 00:00 56 32 18 195 (SSW) 742 mstly cldy none 01:00 56 38 16 204 (SSW) 586 mstly cldy none 02:00 56 38 15 203 (SSW) 602 cloudy rain 03:00 55 42 19 185 (S) 786 cloudy rain 04:00 53 43 20 199 (SSW) 917 cloudy rain 05:00 50 45 13 177 (S) cloudy rain Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
