Upon opening with TripleSpec, we started finding problems with the telescope. With Jeff Bary slewing as NA02, stars in the slitviewer were either not found, or dashed lines, quickly moving out of the slitviewer, like in t0003 and t0004. After checking everything else, like eyelids, mirror covers, instrument, and drive surfaces- I manually adjusted the alt drive with the brake released, issued a set position, and tried with the slitviewer again. Already over an hour into troubleshooting, we found stars again, but with the same streaks, only not so exagerrated. See images t0027-t0030 for examples. The telescope was having trouble tracking and they would not stay in the FOV long. I checked the drive surfaces and found nothing there. I called Bill again at ~22:40, and he took over experimentation using the NA2 guider. Unable to identify the problem, he came to the site, and began physical inspection ~23:30. The NA03/02 users had given up the rest of their time, as we were unsure of how long the diagnosis would take. Bill had to manually set the alt drive again, and restart the drive controller. The drive was overshooting known magnesensors by several degrees, even after issuing a set.position. However, it behaved well again after the drive restart, and by this time, ~00:15, I mounted DIS for UW07, did some test slews and a focus run. Everything behaved well at this point. We closed at twilight because the fainter targets were lost. Finished the night with cals, and no further problems. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NA03 TSPEC T/H 21:20 00:15 Alt drive lost- had to restart ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 00:49 dcamera 917( 1278) 64 36 13.1 13.2 14.4 13.2 13.1 -- 1.80 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 66 40 9 83 (E) 1402 ptly cldy none 17:00 65 38 2 101 (E) 1356 ptly cldy none 18:00 63 44 17 127 (SE) 2345 ptly cldy none 19:00 59 49 9 151 (SSE) 4743 mstly cldy none 20:00 58 50 13 152 (SSE) 3488 mstly cldy none 21:00 56 49 12 114 (ESE) 3129 ptly cldy none 22:00 56 47 19 129 (SE) 3045 ptly cldy none 23:00 56 43 17 141 (SE) 1851 ptly cldy none 00:00 56 45 18 145 (SE) 2259 mstly clr none 01:00 56 44 15 136 (SE) 2179 mstly clr none 02:00 55 44 12 136 (SE) 2273 clear none 03:00 57 43 6 189 (S) 2091 clear none 04:00 56 44 7 222 (SW) 2238 ptly cldy none 05:00 54 45 6 153 (SSE) 2741 mstly cldy none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
