They then discovered a filter movement issue at sunset, although clouds rolled in right at twilight so we couldn't get on the sky anyhow. When we opened at 19:45, We discovered that the instrument didn't like moving the filter wheel while it was mounted upright, but luckily it worked fine while it was upside-down. We focused (1.36 arc sec seeing) and then moved to NGC1977 (Orion Nebula) for our first real field (and PR picture) before trying some science and calibration targets to help characterize the instrument. Due to wind, APOLLO gave up a few minutes early for the PU02 program. Unfotrunately as soon as I got focused, and we slewed to a std. star the clouds got too thick. We tried a few more times but never really got much in the way of good science data. We closed due to dust/wind at 01:53. We never re-opened. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 21:13 NIIS 4450( 4227) 156 60 6.6 6.3 6.8 5.9 5.5 ? 1.36 23:14 NIIS 4525( 4270) 321 48 5.2 5.4 5.9 5.5 5.4 J? 1.80 00:01 APOLLO 650( 894) 328 66 4.6 4.7 5.2 4.8 4.8 -- 1.80 00:57 ECHELLE 584( -950) 105 61 3.6 4.1 4.7 4.2 3.6 ND3 1.50 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 51 8 27 264 (W) 3147 clear none 17:00 51 8 27 264 (W) 3361 mstly clr none 18:00 47 5 22 248 (WSW) 2837 cloudy none 19:00 46 4 20 247 (WSW) 3060 mstly cldy none 20:00 44 3 23 245 (WSW) 2130 clear none 21:00 44 5 25 212 (SSW) 2856 clear none 22:00 44 5 29 233 (SW) 4935 clear dust 23:00 42 7 26 222 (SW) 3166 clear dust 00:00 41 7 32 214 (SW) 3480 ptly cldy dust 01:00 39 9 33 225 (SW) 3508 ptly cldy dust 02:00 39 9 28 253 (WSW) 5068 mstly cldy dust 03:00 37 9 19 228 (SW) 7908 cloudy dust 04:00 38 6 27 244 (WSW) 5103 cloudy dust 05:00 37 9 24 216 (SW) 3528 cloudy dust Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
