During second half the clouds were thicker and seeing worse, but not bad enough to prevent observations. Since the echelle slitviewer shutter was recently replaced, an hour at midnight was planned for an instrument block, which is more time than needed. In practice, there was some trouble with the new shutter which cost us that hour and a little more, and only 15 minutes was needed for the instrument block (which was almost exactly unchanged from the previous one). Joe Huehnerhoff kindly got out of bed to diagnose and fix the shutter problem. After that the echelle seemed fine. I decided to list this as time lost to equipment even though it was partly planned for an instrument block anyway. The last hour scheduled for the echelle observations was instead used for a ToO, which went smoothly enough although the clouds posed some difficulty. I also took the opportunity to check the DIS slitviewer vs. spectrograph focus, which I wasn't able to do during the engineering. They were in very good agreement with each other. I finished up with echelle observations of epsilon Aurigae. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PU01 E I/H 00:00 01:30 problems with new ecam shutter ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM -------------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:13 TSPEC 450( 145) 33 52 4.2 3.6 3.5 3.1 3.2 Ks 1.00 23:59 APOLLO 450( 603) 71 55 2.9 2.8 3.3 2.8 2.7 530 1.50 02:33 ECHELLE 451(-1181) -13 74 4.3 2.4 2.7 2.4 2.8 ND3 1.30 05:35 dis-slit 399( -138) 120 56 4.4 3.0 3.5 3.1 3.8 - 1.50 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 34 20 5 265 (W) 189 clear none 17:00 31 18 8 265 (W) 211 clear none 18:00 28 18 3 334 (NNW) 216 clear none 19:00 25 19 9 53 (NE) 249 clear none 20:00 27 18 5 12 (NNE) 211 ptly cldy none 21:00 28 17 7 5 (N) 228 ptly cldy none 22:00 28 17 16 24 (NNE) 246 ptly cldy none 23:00 27 15 8 47 (NE) 365 ptly cldy none 00:00 27 16 18 71 (ENE) 275 ptly cldy none 01:00 27 10 6 67 (ENE) 338 ptly cldy none 02:00 27 2 9 65 (ENE) 320 ptly cldy none 03:00 30 -13 7 83 (E) 312 ptly cldy none 04:00 31 -13 8 74 (ENE) 566 ptly cldy none 05:00 29 -15 9 86 (E) 672 ptly cldy none 06:00 28 -14 9 95 (E) 612 ptly cldy none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
