During second half the observers were looking at extended objects so it was hard to be sure, but at times the field stars looked as bad as the comets, and the guiding was also very jumpy. During first half, the DIS slitviewer shutter was failing on about half the exposures. Usually this wasn't a problem except when user error (mis-entered coordinates) combined with shutter misbehavior to cost us a lot of extra time in identifying the field. There was also a case where the DIS slitviewer hung up, probably due to colliding commands. It stopped silently, and the status continued to show that it was guiding. The telescope tracked adequately for a while, but a later exposure had no photons until we figured out that the guiding was not actually on. When the observer was done in the morning, I did a collimation check with Agile, testing out some shortcuts to streamline the method. ------------- FAILURE LOG -------------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (STEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CU01 D T/S 22:30 22:50 silent guider failure CU01 D I/H 23:40 23:52 dcam shutter stickage ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:41 dis-slit 125( 421) 83 72 4.5 7.1 5.8 6.0 5.8 1.30 01:05 ECHELLE 45( -805) 80 30 2.4 2.1 2.4 1.7 2.1 ND3 1.70 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:00 45 27 6 3 (N) 338 clear none 17:00 44 27 10 5 (N) 335 clear none 18:00 42 27 10 80 (E) 331 clear none 19:00 40 27 8 86 (E) 301 clear none 20:00 38 27 3 78 (ENE) 356 clear none 21:00 38 27 13 53 (NE) 412 clear none 22:00 37 27 9 131 (SE) 375 clear none 23:00 38 27 0 245 (WSW) 295 clear none 00:00 36 27 6 264 (W) 372 clear none 01:00 36 27 2 137 (SE) 403 clear none 02:00 35 28 1 192 (SSW) 492 clear none 03:00 35 28 1 225 (SW) 508 clear none 04:00 34 28 15 54 (NE) 617 clear none 05:00 33 28 8 11 (N) 629 clear humid 06:00 32 28 25 75 (ENE) 661 clear humid Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
