Pointing with Agile was significantly off, which I was expecting but hoped it wouldn't be quite so bad; the stars were off the field of view so I had to go to a very bright star to be certain of the identification. I spent about 15 minutes correcting the pointing before we went on to observe, but since this was in twilight and didn't impinge on the observer's science I didn't count the time as lost. The pointing correction brought the tertiary tilts closer to zero, and should be good for future observations at least until the engineering changes things around again. During second half we had a few motion errors with altitude. The first occurrence only required a minute or two to correct, but the second time there was a cluster of errors recurring just when I thought I had cleared up the problem, so I did count that as lost time. I checked for moth guts after the first instance and didn't see anything, but perhaps a moth might have caused the later cluster of problems. The Agile heartbeat stopped and needed a restart at the beginning of the night, after a successful checkout but before the observer started his cals; once observing started the instrument was fine. ------------- FAILURE LOG -------------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (STEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UW10 S T/H 5:15 5:25 Alt motion errors ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:47 AGILE 275(-1573) -72 51 11.5 12.0 11.9 11.4 11.6 r 0.51 01:09 SPICAM 269( 674) -23 39 10.7 10.7 11.0 10.4 10.7 R 0.63 03:22 SPICAM 225( 605) 148 33 10.6 9.9 10.2 9.5 9.7 R 0.95 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:00 59 35 17 248 (WSW) 527 mstly clr none 17:00 57 37 9 215 (SW) 601 mstly clr none 18:00 56 36 12 246 (WSW) 656 mstly clr none 19:00 52 32 8 241 (WSW) 548 clear none 20:00 52 32 12 223 (SW) 553 clear none 21:00 53 30 13 240 (WSW) 527 clear none 22:00 53 30 16 255 (WSW) 534 clear none 23:00 52 30 17 236 (SW) 503 clear none 00:00 51 29 13 244 (WSW) 487 clear none 01:00 52 21 12 266 (W) 370 clear none 02:00 51 19 10 265 (W) 313 clear none 03:00 50 19 6 282 (WNW) 260 clear none 04:00 51 18 7 351 (N) 248 clear none 05:00 50 18 7 357 (N) 240 clear none 06:00 48 18 8 35 (NE) 249 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
