The middle hours of the night were pre-empted for engineering, which had to be prolonged somewhat because we wasted some time dodging clouds. By the time I handed over to the second half observer, the clouds had completely closed in. He gave up at 03:30 once his transit event had passed, and then the sky cleared up so I resumed engineering. More clouds returned, enough to impede science but not engineering. The engineering started with collimation, which did not behave as expected based on measurements during the daytime; however, Nick and I managed to figure out a method that achieved very little coma in combination with a better centered secondary mirror. After collimation I attempted a pointing model, which failed due to clouds, but then I completed a pointing model during the later clear patch. More checks will be done tomorrow during the day and possibly more pre-emption will be required on Saturday night, or possibly any remaining tasks will wait until the next scheduled engineering. ------------- FAILURE LOG -------------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (STEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 22:32 SPICAM 218( 315) -66 55 1.6 1.8 2.0 1.7 1.8 r 1.10 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:00 43 32 13 231 (SW) 386 ptly cldy none 17:00 41 32 15 236 (SW) 421 ptly cldy none 18:00 40 33 12 256 (WSW) 393 cloudy none 19:00 38 31 13 245 (WSW) 440 cloudy none 20:00 37 30 17 246 (WSW) 548 cloudy none 21:00 36 30 13 254 (WSW) 516 mstly clr none 22:00 36 29 20 245 (WSW) 383 mstly clr none 23:00 35 28 15 254 (WSW) 360 mstly clr none 00:00 35 27 17 272 (W) 329 ptly cldy none 01:00 35 28 15 272 (W) 339 cloudy none 02:00 35 30 24 276 (W) 372 cloudy none 03:00 34 30 18 263 (W) 414 cloudy none 04:00 32 30 18 267 (W) 446 clear none 05:00 33 29 15 278 (W) 483 ptly cldy none 06:00 33 28 19 294 (WNW) 346 ptly cldy none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
