I tried opening when the dust got below 5000 and found that the interior dust stayed below the limit, possibly because the wind was very light. The night was clear with good, stable seeing. After considerable work on the azimuth drives during the day, Nick found that the lubricant for the main bearing had become contaminated. It was flushed and replaced, and I was on the lookout for trouble tonight. I did have to measure velocity scales twice (579 at afternoon checkout, 583 at midnight changeover), but otherwise it behaved well. There was a brief scare when we saw some guiding/tracking problems mostly in the az direction, but then I realized the guide star was an asteroid. With a more appropriate choice, tracking and guiding were excellent (so was pointing). At UT 04:57:18, there was a rotator controller error in the middle of a slew which halted the other axes sharply. It recovered after an init and only a couple of minutes were lost. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SAEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:56 dis-slit -11( 62) 193 67 9.1 9.7 9.7 9.2 9.0 1.20 22:08 dis-slit -2( -3) 1 56 8.0 8.0 8.4 7.2 7.7 1.20 00:28 dis-slit 45( 15) -72 66 8.1 7.5 8.0 7.4 7.9 1.10 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:00 50 3 2 269 (W) 8667 clear dust 17:00 51 4 7 284 (WNW) 8332 clear dust 18:00 51 4 4 258 (WSW) 7101 clear dust 19:00 48 1 12 31 (NNE) 6605 clear dust 20:00 46 0 15 44 (NE) 5962 clear dust 21:00 48 2 11 11 (N) 4776 clear none 22:00 47 0 8 337 (NNW) 4709 clear none 23:00 47 1 9 299 (WNW) 3933 clear none 00:00 46 1 7 275 (W) 4040 clear none 01:00 47 2 10 266 (W) 4240 clear none 02:00 46 1 11 262 (W) 4322 clear none 03:00 46 1 7 263 (W) 4217 clear none 04:00 45 1 6 262 (W) 4134 clear none 05:00 44 0 8 264 (W) 4234 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
