A problem report was filed. This afternoon Nick homed all the actuators on the secondary in the event that this was the cause of the poor collimation report from last night. As sooon as I finished focusing I checked and indeed there was bad coma seem in defocused images. The observers targets were still at high airmass so they generously allowed us to take 90 minutes to take measurements with the Shack Hartmann and adjust the collimation. The suggested changes in transverse motion of the secondary were not all that large however I did apply the changes and then took another set of data. We were pressed for time so it was a few hours before I was able to take another defocused image. There was a small improvement in the coma however it was still quite evident. It is possible that there is still a problem is in the tilt of M2. No further changes were made tonight. We had no further problems and seeing was mooderate to good until around 0200. We also started seeing high altitude clouds at this time. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SAEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:41 dis-slit -45( -411) 59 68 -1.9 -1.3 -1.1 -1.9 -2.0 -- 1.24 21:15 dis-slit -119(-598) -35 80 -4.1 -3.6 -2.5 -4.6 -4.2 -- 1.00 21:38 NA2gdr 879(22879) 83 35 -3.4 -3.8 -3.4 -4.7 -3.9 clear 1.17 23:09 dis-slit -77( -573) 68 53 -4.5 -4.2 -3.9 -5.2 -4.7 -- 1.67 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:00 27 0 2 14 (NNE) 538 clear none 17:00 27 -1 8 341 (NNW) 562 clear none 18:00 28 -1 21 9 (N) 1007 clear none 19:00 28 -1 12 5 (N) 971 clear none 20:00 26 -1 7 303 (WNW) 958 clear none 21:00 25 -2 5 262 (W) 701 clear none 22:00 26 -1 7 282 (WNW) 873 clear none 23:00 24 -1 5 249 (WSW) 786 clear none 00:00 26 -2 5 273 (W) 840 clear none 01:00 26 -3 11 269 (W) 819 clear none 02:00 25 -4 9 276 (W) 808 ptly cldy none 03:00 25 -4 12 292 (WNW) 765 ptly cldy none 04:00 26 -3 14 315 (NW) 827 ptly cldy none 05:00 26 0 11 302 (WNW) 869 ptly cldy none 06:00 27 2 14 309 (NW) 1028 mstly clr none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
