Shortly after we focused and the user slewed to their first star we were getting repeated over current conditions on the rotator near 40 degrees rotation. I found that even with an e-stop engaged I could not rotate the instrument by hand past this point. I quickly discovered that the rotator was out of cable wrap. The best I can guess is that yesterday when Fritz and I switched from the new axis controller back to the old controller we had zero'd the rotator but on the wrong cable wrap. Because we did not open last night and my test slews did not exercise the rotator far enough in the positive direction during checkout it did not present as a problem until we got on sky. I dismounted DIS, properly zero'd (leveled) the rotator and remounted the instrument. The whole process took around 40 minutes. There were no other problems tonight other than an occasional need to restart the dis-slitviewer hub which causes insignificant downtime and will not be recorded. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- PU05 D T/H 18:24 19:00 Rotator zero'd on wrong wrap ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM ----------------------------------------------------------------- 18:09 dis-slit 281(-190) 13 77 -2.7 -3.4 -2.4 -3.3 -2.7 - 1.31 19:40 dis-slit 74(-329) 118 35 -1.2 -3.2 -2.1 -3.3 -2.3 - 1.77 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:00 21 -17 8 1 (N) 247 clear none 17:00 28 -20 26 31 (NNE) 596 clear none 18:00 29 -21 17 39 (NE) 838 clear none 19:00 26 -24 18 29 (NNE) 578 clear none 20:00 30 -19 9 36 (NE) 1052 clear none 21:00 30 -17 12 354 (N) 1069 clear none 22:00 31 -16 7 338 (NNW) 1142 clear none 23:00 33 -13 6 339 (NNW) 1050 clear none 00:00 34 -13 16 278 (W) 776 mstly clr none 01:00 34 -12 16 270 (W) 794 mstly clr none 02:00 34 -12 16 255 (WSW) 759 mstly clr none 03:00 34 -11 11 268 (W) 821 ptly cldy none 04:00 34 -11 15 246 (WSW) 796 ptly cldy none 05:00 34 -11 17 290 (WNW) 787 ptly cldy none 06:00 33 -11 12 248 (WSW) 756 ptly cldy none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
