Dust counts were hovering just below the limit; when I decided to open, they crept above the limit. By the time we had focused and determined the seeing was nearly unusable, dust was high enough to make me uncomfortable. We closed just before a real dust spike started. Dust remained high for the rest of first half. When it dropped to acceptable levels around 02:30, orographic clouds were too thick to permit even focusing. We eventually got focused through some holes in the clouds, then observed through some other holes, and finally it cleared up nicely after about 04:30. Focus values were rather strange in the evening, as shown in the focus log; this might reflect the large temp swing from last night to the beginning of tonight, or the limited ventilation time before we first opened, or possibly an incorrect fan state when we focused the first time. I was running the fans in non-standard configurations to cope with dust. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:25 SPIcam 150 153 66 7.0 i 2.5 03:20 SPIcam -175(-102) 164 56 2.0 2.61 2.78 2.88 2.09 r 1.01 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:00 50 20 23 271 (W) 3636 ptly cldy dust 17:00 51 19 15 257 (WSW) 3903 ptly cldy dust 18:00 50 15 40 308 (NW) 3764 ptly cldy dust 19:00 48 8 24 311 (NW) 2462 ptly cldy none 20:00 46 5 12 325 (NW) 3126 ptly cldy none 21:00 43 26 16 281 (W) 8346 mstly clr dust 22:00 41 25 19 286 (WNW) 8436 ptly cldy dust 23:00 41 24 20 275 (W) 7276 ptly cldy dust 00:00 40 14 23 297 (WNW) 4897 mstly clr dust 01:00 38 0 14 322 (NW) 4676 ptly cldy dust 02:00 36 -2 2 132 (SE) 3141 mstly cldy none 03:00 36 -3 15 328 (NNW) 2689 mstly cldy none 04:00 35 -1 6 279 (W) 2281 ptly cldy none 05:00 34 0 19 331 (NNW) 2030 clear none 06:00 33 -1 15 1 (N) 1586 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
