We had some trouble getting going with Agile: first a question about mounting the disk so I could access images, then some mystery about lines in the twilight flats that hadn't been there in March (we decided it was due to the different filter). Then it turned out the target star was pretty nearly invisible in the U filter, but the changes that had been made to the filter slide in order to accommodate our 3" filters didn't accept our 2" filter adapters. I had to do some emergency filter-holder surgery to put the BG40 filter back in the instrument. It was nearly 22:00 when we finally started taking data. After some consideration, I left the confusion parts out of the time accounting and only listed the filter difficulties as equipment trouble. APOLLO nearly had to give up time due to a spotter no-show, but an on-site visitor (thanks, Larry!) graciously consented to fill in. We got returns from one reflector, with considerable work in spite of the excellent conditions -- possibly a laser threshold problem. The DIS observations were mostly more peaceful, but both DIS and echelle were showing a lot of image motion in the azimuth direction (altitude 20-30 in the SE and S). Finally I clued in that this wasn't windshake but bad tracking, and I tried playing with the tuning parameters a little. I didn't want to change any of the values too much without being able to see the effects at video speed, but I think I managed to improve but not eliminate the tracking troubles. Azimuth PID-loop tuning should be on the slate for the upcoming engineering. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- UW02 P I/H 21:20 21:40 Agile filter woes ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:35 Agile -175(370) 70 72 6.6 8.21 7.29 7.67 7.19 U 0.85 20:38 NA2gdr 816(36817) 72 60 7.1 8.11 7.34 7.55 7.16 R 0.81 02:25 DISslit -44(30) 18 57 7.3 7.06 6.54 6.86 6.97 - 1.0 04:55 Echelle -85(-850) 45 60 6.0 6.14 5.61 5.94 6.28 ND3 1.1 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:00 57 18 8 266 (W) 538 clear none 17:00 49 13 2 264 (W) 487 clear none 18:00 50 14 14 267 (W) 581 clear none 19:00 48 14 10 268 (W) 496 clear none 20:00 44 14 7 256 (WSW) 581 clear none 21:00 44 14 13 238 (WSW) 624 clear none 22:00 45 12 11 227 (SW) 643 clear none 23:00 46 12 10 227 (SW) 544 clear none 00:00 46 11 12 223 (SW) 547 clear none 01:00 46 10 12 224 (SW) 533 clear none 02:00 46 10 13 226 (SW) 479 clear none 03:00 45 11 13 234 (SW) 506 clear none 04:00 43 11 12 236 (SW) 557 clear none 05:00 44 11 6 260 (W) 523 clear none 06:00 45 13 11 273 (W) 399 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
