The instrument had several instances where the exposure control would lock up. One instance around 3pm required a reboot of the hub software and power cycling of the leech controller after all other normal fixes (hub restarts and nicfps expose init) failed on several attempts. It locked up again within the hour. Recovery was done in the proper way this time. Skies were clear and seeing sub arcsecond all evening. The guider died and required a power cycling around 8pm. Little blue explosions were seen every few minutes out the exhaust vent of the boiler on the roof of the control building early in the evening. I called Ben Harris, who instructed me how to shutdown the boiler. At change over, the echelle slitviewer was found dead and required a reboot of the Mac which controls it. No other problems second half. Both problems took less than 3 minutes to recover from, so no loss in observing time is being counted. Finisher Upper: R.McMillan The last quarter of the night was as smooth as the surface of Europa, culminating in a 3-reflector run for APOLLO. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CU05 F I/H --:-- --:-- gcam required power cycle JH02 E I/H --:-- --:-- ecam required power cycle ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM ---------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:49 gfp 50(287) 123 70 7.2 8.2 7.5 7.5 7.2 R 0.9 00:12 Echelle -83(-895) -123 69 4.9 5.2 4.7 4.8 4.8 R+nd2 0.7 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 15:59 47 20 ?? 111 clear none 16:59 47 19 ?? 72 clear none 17:59 44 16 ?? 17 clear none 18:59 46 9 ?? 2 clear none 19:59 46 10 ?? 3 clear none 20:59 42 13 ?? 36 clear none 21:59 42 9 ?? 22 clear none 22:59 43 3 ?? 47 clear none 23:59 42 0 ?? 76 clear none 00:59 40 8 ?? 115 clear none 01:59 41 3 ?? 97 clear none 02:59 43 2 ?? 88 clear none 03:59 39 6 ?? 155 clear none 04:59 39 8 ?? 184 clear none 05:59 40 17 ?? 154 clear none The convention used is north=0 degrees, east=90 degrees.
