At the start of the night, three of the four temperature sensors on NIC-FPS were showing unacceptably high values even though the instrument had been filled four times in the previous 24 hours. After consultation with the NIC-FPS folks, we decided to warm the instrument in order to pump it and replace the moribund ion pump. This will take several days (starting on Dec 26) and displace some scheduled NIC-FPS observations. I accomplished the high-priority engineering tasks, notably observations of photometric standards with Agile; some of them were troubled by bad seeing, but I hope still usable. I also did some tracking tests in different parts of the sky and found tracking problems in the azimuth direction in some places, the altitude direction in others. I would be interested to repeat these tests after fresh pointing model. file az alt comment tracking.0001 65 58 slightly longer in az dir (less than 2:1) tracking.0002 0 62 slightly longer in az dir (less than 2:1) tracking.0003 -40 55 longer in az dir (more than 2:1) tracking.0004 -48 53 tweaked focus; longer in az dir (about 2:1) focus sweep tracking.0005 240 63 longer in alt dir (about 2:1) tracking.0006 190 78 much longer & irreg in alt direction (more than 2:1) tracking.0007 125 61 not elongated (poor seeing) tracking.0008 180 61 slightly longer in alt dir (less than 2:1), poor seeing Seeing was too poor to do a Shack-Hartmann altitude sweep, but I did manage to get a simple collimation measurement, and made an adjustment based on that. Then I took a pointing model to correct the change caused by the collimation. The pointing model results were interesting and had something to say about the state of the azimuth drive, but I'll have to work on the analysis tomorrow when I'm more awake. TUI on Obs1 hung up twice (once when opening the Spicam focus script, once when I purged some programs from the Permissions window), but I believe it was the fault of the machine rather than TUI (the same version of TUI on my laptop, also running MacOSX, was fine). After the second hang, Obs1 kept complaining about not being able to find a home disk even after multiple reboots. Because of this I misplaced focus information for the night. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions --------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:00 34 11 12 355 (N) 285 clear none 17:00 37 5 7 325 (NW) 196 clear none 18:00 35 10 11 353 (N) 163 clear none 19:00 40 4 18 304 (NW) 157 clear none 20:00 37 14 14 292 (WNW) 75 clear none 21:00 37 12 12 265 (W) 121 clear none 22:00 38 13 18 279 (W) 54 clear none 23:00 38 11 22 286 (WNW) 32 clear none 00:00 36 11 13 279 (W) 142 clear none 01:00 36 12 11 266 (W) 197 clear none 02:00 35 12 17 264 (W) 280 clear none 03:00 34 11 18 268 (W) 342 clear none 04:00 34 10 15 271 (W) 312 clear none 05:00 34 11 15 264 (W) 332 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
