Thin patchy clouds lingering around, then mostly clear after 20:30. Slitviewer trouble: While guiding along just fine for quite sometime, the DIS slitviewer suddenly went blank (see guider images 279 through 286). There were no clouds, we had not moved, we were at 40 degrees elevation in the SE, the eyelid was open, it was well above freezing, no lamps were on. I tried taking a few images - same problem. I restarted the nub for dcam because the guider then locked up. Then I slewed to a nearby focus star and took another guider image (see #287). This image looks like the telescope is moving but according to the TUI status window it was not (and the slit should not be moving anyway). The next image came out as expected. Then we slewed back to the field we had been on and all was well. We lost about 15 minutes. The rest of the first half went smoothly. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half was very peaceful, with a few thin clouds and mostly good seeing. We had all zeroes when NIC-FPS was checked out, then the observer took some successful darks, and then after I mounted the instrument it was giving images that were almost all zeroes again. Both times it cleared with "nicfps expose init." ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CU02 D I/S 21:10 21:25 DISslit images saturated ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 17:50 DISslit -140(-181) 205 54 5.3 4.6 3.4 3.8 4.4 -- 1.5 00:25 NICFPS -16(401) -3 78 3.7 3.46 2.97 3.13 3.5 J 1.0 03:55 NICFPS -28(396) -112 78 4.7 3.55 2.47 3.43 4.5 J 0.72 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:02 39 14 5 189 (S) 646 mstly clr none 17:02 35 8 7 165 (SSE) 588 mstly clr none 18:02 42 1 4 179 (S) 723 ptly cldy none 19:02 40 2 8 177 (S) 610 ptly cldy none 20:02 40 1 10 190 (S) 604 mstly clr none 21:02 41 1 14 233 (SW) 942 clear none 22:02 41 0 11 229 (SW) 1346 clear none 23:02 40 -3 7 234 (SW) 1553 clear none 00:02 39 -3 5 202 (SSW) 1304 clear none 01:02 36 0 6 235 (SW) 1460 clear none 02:02 36 3 10 265 (W) 1289 clear none 03:02 37 5 7 263 (W) 1172 mstly clr none 04:02 40 -2 15 272 (W) 1231 mstly clr none 05:02 37 3 15 289 (WNW) 1106 mstly clr none 06:02 36 12 13 269 (W) 836 mstly clr none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
