During afternoon checkout I discovered that the secondary wasn't moving. It would not respond to move commands. After several calls to various people, Jon and Fritz established that tcc was not talking to the secondary. The host sessions were not responding. So tcc had to be rebooted. Once everything came back up tcc could send moves to the secondary and we were pretty much ready to go on sky. Except, then the humidity was too high. During all of the secondary escapades, control to the lamps was coming and going. They worked fine at the beginning of the night but when the observer tried to do cals later, the gui would not respond, for him or me. Then a little while later the lamps did work, but the text labels next to each button still read Outlet #. The humidity continued to hover just below closure limits, but given the clear skies and lack of local radar activity, I decided to open at 8:40pm. The humidity hung there for the rest of 1st half but we persevered. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan By the end of first half, humidity was right at the limit if I compared dewpoint to the primary mirror temperature (an old sensor). We don't have all the new sensors on the top end reading yet, so the primary was the coldest one recording. I was concerned because I didn't know how much the new top end might supercool below air temperature. At the program changeover, I went upstairs and checked various dome surfaces and also the top end for incipient condensation, but everything seemed fine. So we continued observing with the humidity stable right at the limit. Everything went smoothly for a while, with the lampswitch working consistently (except for the labels being wrong) and the telescope pointing very well, until clouds began to form overhead after 04:00. Since the humidity was just a hair above the limit, I decided to close for the clouds. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- NM04 D T/H 18:45 20:30 tcc not talking to sec ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air Dir MPH filt FWHM ----------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:50 DIS 100(-64) 20 44 10.5 260 6 - 1.0 00:28 DISslit 150( ) 9.7 - 1.1 01:24 DISslit 140( ) 9.7 - 1.08 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:00 57 47 10 234 (SW) 516 clear none 17:00 54 45 5 265 (W) 489 clear none 18:00 55 46 6 261 (W) 547 clear none 19:00 50 46 1 237 (WSW) 514 clear humid 20:00 50 46 5 266 (W) 739 clear humid 21:00 50 45 5 274 (W) 827 mstly clr humid 22:00 50 45 4 232 (SW) 757 ptly cldy humid 23:00 50 45 4 255 (WSW) 807 ptly cldy humid 00:00 50 45 6 187 (S) 781 clear humid 01:00 50 45 9 221 (SW) 705 clear humid 02:00 50 45 7 242 (WSW) 661 clear humid 03:00 49 45 5 249 (WSW) 678 clear humid 04:00 49 45 7 216 (SW) 663 ptly cldy humid 05:00 49 45 7 184 (S) 730 mstly cldy humid Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
