Amazing. George was able to get his observations at the beginning of night. The rest of the first half was fairly clear and pleasant -- few thin clouds now and again, moderate humidity, but certainly useable. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half had some clouds and also some radar echoes at the north end of the county. I was twitchy not only because of previous weather patterns but also because at this time of year, the weather satellites stop working for a few hours during second half. So I closed for one patch of clouds that turned out to be nothing, then the next patch of clouds brought a humidity spike and we closed for good. Seeing was good for the first few hours of second half, and the image distortions mentioned by Bill Ketzeback during the last week were again visible. They looked like bad collimation to me, implicating a probable pop of the secondary vanes, but there was no time to pursue the problem and it would be pointless with the telescope about to be taken apart anyway. As long as we stayed in focus (which takes extra attention in good seeing conditions), the image quality was acceptable. Later, the seeing worsened and our image quality was dominated by weather rather than optics. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:15 Echelle 100(529) 90 66 14.3/17.2 284 2 nd1 1.2 21:16 DISslit -75(1166) 126 45 14.2/16.0 331 3 - 1.1 01:20 SPIcam 50(1282) 165 57 13.4/13.3 261 2 R 0.65 02:32 SPIcam 70(1275) 207 64 13.5/13.1 254 1 R 0.97 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:00 63 52 3 250 (WSW) 313 mstly clr none 17:00 66 52 13 244 (WSW) 205 mstly clr none 18:00 64 54 9 225 (SW) 289 mstly clr none 19:00 61 53 6 237 (WSW) 300 mstly clr none 20:00 58 48 2 282 (WNW) 202 mstly clr none 21:00 58 46 1 327 (NNW) 221 clear none 22:00 55 49 2 348 (NNW) 311 mstly clr none 23:00 57 49 2 349 (N) 318 mstly clr none 00:00 57 50 5 302 (WNW) 307 clear none 01:00 55 50 3 314 (NW) 319 ptly cldy none 02:00 56 49 1 220 (SW) 266 ptly cldy none 03:00 56 49 3 265 (W) 306 ptly cldy none 04:00 56 48 2 204 (SSW) 261 mstly cldy humid 05:00 54 52 2 244 (WSW) 429 mstly cldy humid 06:00 54 53 4 270 (W) 498 ptly cldy humid Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
