All we got was widespread cirrus first half and patchy thicker clouds second half. A southwest wind and good seeing in initial images quickly became a brisk southeast breeze with mediocre to poor seeing. During checkout, I heard a rasping noise while the tertiary was moving. Subsequents tests didn't repeat the noise, but when we switched to APOLLO the tertiary failed to adjust tilts for the new port; apparently actuator C is stuck. Pointing was 1.5 arcminutes off with APOLLO, causing some delay in getting started, and 2.5 arcminutes off when we later observed with DIS. The position of the stuck actuator was nearly correct for the echelle, which had decent pointing. Despite the delay in initial acquisition, the APOLLO observations went well and netted two retro-reflectors. The echelle also worked nicely until the slitviewer crashed hard while setting up on the very last target, a standard. The observer decided to skip the standard rather than delay the instrument handover. The poor pointing with DIS cost a few minutes, but otherwise it functioned well. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UW11 A T/H 20:20 20:40 tertC stuck; bad pointing UC10 D T/H 01:15 01:27 tertC stuck; bad pointing ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:30 APOLLO -50 22:00 echelle -123 01:27 DISslit -50(1050) 146 52 13.2/13.3 77 12 - 1.8 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 67 41 7 233 (SW) 652 ptly cldy none 17:00 67 40 4 253 (WSW) 516 ptly cldy none 18:00 71 41 12 229 (SW) 500 ptly cldy none 19:00 66 37 6 218 (SW) 525 cirrus none 20:00 61 35 1 202 (SSW) 431 cirrus none 21:00 60 36 15 75 (ENE) 567 cirrus none 22:00 58 38 10 110 (ESE) 632 cirrus none 23:00 57 38 13 80 (E) 632 cirrus none 00:00 56 38 14 83 (E) 632 cirrus none 01:00 56 40 12 82 (E) 632 mstly clr none 02:00 55 40 10 85 (E) 632 ptly cldy none 03:00 55 40 9 80 (E) 632 ptly cldy none 04:00 57 37 2 332 (NNW) 632 ptly cldy none 05:00 55 41 8 116 (ESE) 632 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
