Opened on time. DIS slitviewer locked up for the observer. After a brief discussion with observer about symptoms, I issued a hub startNubs for dcamera and dcam, and then he restarted his guider and all seemed well. Since I don't know the exact cause I did not write it up as a PR. Seeing was fair at 0.9/1.0". Stayed mostly clear all 1st half. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Second half started with very, very thin clouds lurking around, just short of photometric. The only high-priority task on the list was DIS throughput, and I elected to wait in hopes that the almost-clear skies would become completely clear. So we started with echelle observations of a high-priority target, during which we warmed up the APOLLO laser for a trouble-shooting test. The trouble-shooting test failed; the critical timing of outgoing light is still broken. Next I switched to the Shack-Hartmann for a quick check of collimation in case the secondary vanes had popped in the past week. I found a small change, but not significant enough to try to correct. I also used the Shack-Hartmann video to check tracking in multiple places around the sky, since I had found bad tracking last week and didn't have time to do a thorough check. I found a little wobbliness at high southern transits (our worst trouble spot), but tuning adjustments didn't seem to make much difference. Everywhere else showed very nice tracking. During the Shack-Hartmann work, my gamble with the weather turned out to be a mistake. Wispy clouds moved in and the sky went from almost-not-quite-photometric to definitely not photometric. I tried to get throughput data on BD+28 before the clouds got there, only to have the telescope track into the limit. By the time the star was out of the zone of avoidance, the clouds had moved in. I took data anyway, and it may be useful as a quality check of the new gratings -- but not as absolute throughput data. The sky didn't improve again before twilight. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:50 DISslit -50(1221) -20 57 16.1/17.6 138 13 -- 0.9 22:20 DISslit 0(1200) -5 60 15.9/16.2 148 16 -- 1.0 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:00 67 45 5 187 (S) 551 ptly cldy none 17:00 66 44 7 174 (S) 531 ptly cldy none 18:00 66 45 10 129 (SE) 524 ptly cldy none 19:00 64 45 7 163 (SSE) 569 mstly clr none 20:00 61 43 14 134 (SE) 571 mstly clr none 21:00 61 43 13 132 (SE) 601 mstly clr none 22:00 61 44 15 138 (SE) 642 mstly clr none 23:00 60 44 13 157 (SSE) 710 mstly clr none 00:00 61 43 11 178 (S) 769 mstly clr none 01:00 59 45 12 165 (SSE) 803 mstly clr none 02:00 59 45 13 182 (S) 1264 mstly clr none 03:00 58 45 12 179 (S) 2352 mstly clr none 04:00 58 45 10 179 (S) 2120 mstly clr none 05:00 56 45 4 190 (S) 1388 mstly clr none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
