Fog rolled in about 16:45. Rain sensor went off at 17:30. Lightly snowing in the fog until about 21:00. I ran the snow program with the dome heaters on for a while then turned the heaters off since it was about -6 degrees C outside. Continued to run the snow program all 1st half. 2nd half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Falling snow (total ~4 inches), blowing snow, high humidity, and high winds kept us closed for the remainder of the night. I worked for a while with the remote observer on a problem with her TUI. The computer room air compressor failed, so we had to open the hatch to let it get outside air directly. I took the opportunity to exercise the secondary and tertiary mirrors, since the dome temperature was down to almost -10 C, a realm which has beenn problematic in the past. All eight actuators moved when commanded; tertiary actuator A showed a large error (~50,000 steps) after one move, but it corrected on subsequent moves. The DIS slitviewer shutter, which has had cold-related problems in the past and was apparently sticky earlier in the evening, behaved fine when I tested it. These items will bear watching as winter progresses, but they seem all right for now. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:01 29 23 25 269 (W) 6573 cloudy none 17:01 23 23 16 305 (NW) 4159 cloudy fog 18:01 22 22 18 315 (NW) 783 cloudy lt snow 19:01 20 19 11 287 (WNW) 554 cloudy lt snow 20:01 16 14 17 328 (NNW) 740 cloudy lt snow 21:01 15 12 16 321 (NW) 875 cloudy fog 22:01 14 10 3 351 (N) 852 cloudy fog 23:01 13 11 3 244 (WSW) 9033 mstly cldy lt snow 00:01 6 2 23 75 (ENE) 1582 ptly cldy lt snow 01:01 4 0 24 67 (ENE) 511 mstly cldy lt snow 02:01 4 0 36 69 (ENE) 2467 mstly cldy lt snow 03:01 4 0 13 85 (E) 2637 mstly cldy lt snow 04:01 3 0 22 64 (ENE) 875 mstly cldy lt snow Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
