Various trouble getting setup - all mostly software/networking issues. The observers were not familiar with using Newton, they were expecting Tycho. Problems include: aiscam gui could not display on Newton, aiscam could not talk to tcc, aiscam images could not display on Newton (using ds9 or iraf). Eventually we found work-arounds for most of these issues with the help of Bill and Russet via phone. All these issues delayed data collection about 1 hour. Then the GFP had assorted mechanical problems. Other "network" problems reared up throughout the night. Programs on several different machines would seem slow suddenly or hang then just as suddenly resume. But hey, the seeing looked pretty good tonight. 2nd half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Continued clear second half, with good seeing most of the time except for a brief period around 03:30. The GFP's wavelength calibration was still uncertain, but everything else worked well. At very high southern transit, we saw some image elongation in a direction that was aligned with neither az nor el -- most likely implicating the B or C sectors of the PMSS. But no misbehavior was visible on the dataq, so I was somewhat puzzled. The image elongation would not have been noticeable in conditions of moderate seeing or worse, so it will be hard to nail down but also unlikely to cause serious trouble for anyone's science. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- DD03 F T/S 17:57 18:55 image transfer problems ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM ----------------------------------------------------------------- 18:10 NA2gdr -50(190) 139 66 7.2 8.4 7.3 7.5 7.1 - 0.9 18:40 GFP 50(283) 139 66 7.1 7.7 6.9 7.3 7.1 S 1.0 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:01 47 17 6 297 (WNW) 632 clear none 17:01 44 16 1 331 (NNW) 481 clear none 18:01 44 18 12 26 (NNE) 152 clear none 19:01 45 17 17 24 (NNE) 241 clear none 20:01 45 16 16 20 (NNE) 353 clear none 21:01 46 9 14 21 (NNE) 120 clear none 22:01 45 9 15 54 (NE) 105 clear none 23:01 45 11 15 33 (NNE) 151 clear none 00:01 44 15 11 20 (NNE) 332 clear none 01:01 43 13 11 30 (NNE) 230 clear none 02:01 43 12 14 34 (NE) 229 clear none 03:01 42 12 8 17 (NNE) 257 clear none 04:01 41 9 10 40 (NE) 134 clear none 05:01 41 11 22 54 (NE) 217 clear none 06:01 41 11 16 63 (ENE) 254 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
