After 12 degree twilight the humidity was still high but I felt the conditions were safe to open. Humidity eased down eventually, but hovered on the moderate to high side most of 1st half. Seeing was not so hot tonight. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Patchy fast-moving clouds thickened after midnight until the observer wasn't getting anything. I closed the mirror covers first, then decided to go ahead and close the dome. We stayed closed for a while, first due to clouds and then due to high winds. While the observers were taking cals, some of their flats failed apparently because the instrument shutter was left open. I wasn't certain whether leaving it open was a software mistake or a hardware stickage problem, but after a dis home shutter everything was fine. The wind dropped a bit and I re-opened, asking the observers to stay east away from the wind direction. This was good because the wind soon gusted over the limit again. Since everything looked fine on the telescope telemetry I stayed open. Seeing was variable, around 2 arcsec. Humidity and high clouds continued to make observations challenging, but we kept going until twilight. We had one interesting small guiding problem that didn't cost any observing time. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM ----------------------------------------------------------------- 19:35 DISslit -125(-59) 50 83 4.7 6.8 5.7 6.0 4.9 -- 1.7 21:10 DISslit -25(-21) 116 61 5.2 5.2 4.7 5.2 4.8 -- 1.4 22:30 DISslit 0(-24) 130 76 5.1 4.6 4.2 4.7 4.6 -- 1.5 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:01 44 40 14 268 (W) 169 ptly cldy humid 17:01 44 38 14 268 (W) 174 mstly clr humid 18:01 43 38 20 254 (WSW) 168 clear humid 19:01 41 37 20 244 (WSW) 173 clear humid 20:01 41 35 19 246 (WSW) 192 clear none 21:01 41 33 14 267 (W) 140 clear none 22:01 41 32 21 267 (W) 119 clear none 23:01 41 32 18 267 (W) 129 clear none 00:01 41 32 14 269 (W) 132 ptly cldy none 01:01 41 32 17 290 (WNW) 164 ptly cldy none 02:01 41 33 24 277 (W) 178 mstly clr none 03:01 40 31 14 267 (W) 169 mstly clr humid 04:01 37 33 18 283 (WNW) 252 ptly cldy none 05:01 38 30 18 288 (WNW) 273 ptly cldy none 06:01 36 30 15 295 (WNW) 309 ptly cldy humid Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
