Mostly clear with high humidity at sunset. Humidity hovered at closure limits for a while right after opening, but soon backed down. Rest of 1st half was clear and useful. 2nd Half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Clear skies and moderate humidity. Mediocre seeing. There was some weirdness with a DIS mask image (which Gabrelle had created and read in earlier in the night, including restarting the nubs) which somehow didn't get applied until I turned off and back on the Mask display on a completely different TUI (on newton). So first I saw the old mask in effect, then I saw the new one without doing anything real. This cost no time; we just warned the observers to be more careful about centering and guiding. They were mostly using Field Star guiding, which is less sensitive to the mask. I decided not to PR the problem because I didn't think I understood it well enough. We had a little trouble with image elongation in the azimuth direction on NIC-FPS near the azimuth direction reversal. I would call it poor but not horrible tracking; it was worst when the NIC-FPS dither pattern made an offset in azimuth, and then it took a minute to recover. When the observer wanted to switch to the echelle, I had trouble with the slitviewer. Requested images timed out. I restarted the nubs and had the same problem. I was able to connect to the slitviewer ICC via Timbuktu, but it responded very sluggishly. So I told it to reboot. When it came back up, I couldn't connect with Timbuktu and had to go up to the intermediate level to talk to the machine itself. It wanted to log in to ecam@hven (I presume for the NFS mount), and complained when I didn't know the password. I phoned Fritz and he changed the password, but then I got a complaint that the remote server wasn't configured correctly. We concluded this would not be a quick fix, so the observer went back to working with NIC-FPS. The APOLLO run was unsuccessful, mostly (but perhaps not entirely) because of poor seeing at the moon's low altitude. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ---------------------------------------------------------------------- CU05 E I/S 04:26 04:42 Slitty wanted NFS pword ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp Strc Prim Sec Air filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:10 DISslit 575(75) 42 50 4.4 5.6 5.0 4.7 4.6 -- 1.2 20:00 DISslit 500(-23) 24 55 4.4 4.9 4.3 4.3 4.4 -- 1.9 21:50 DISslit 425(-115) -1 58 4.6 4.2 3.7 4.0 4.1 -- 1.1 02:08 NICFPS 480(476) -162 35 4.5 4.3 3.8 4.0 4.3 -- 1.4 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------- 16:00 42 37 12 302 (WNW) 225 clear humid 17:00 44 36 14 293 (WNW) 221 clear humid 18:00 43 33 11 281 (W) 242 clear humid 19:00 40 36 12 272 (W) 383 clear humid 20:00 40 34 12 235 (SW) 569 clear none 21:00 40 33 11 266 (W) 597 clear none 22:00 41 33 11 271 (W) 535 clear none 23:00 42 32 17 275 (W) 430 clear none 00:00 41 32 15 263 (W) 392 clear none 01:00 40 30 16 281 (W) 405 clear none 02:00 40 28 15 290 (WNW) 441 clear none 03:00 40 28 21 291 (WNW) 405 clear none 04:00 39 30 15 272 (W) 493 clear none 05:00 38 30 18 272 (W) 501 clear none 06:00 37 31 16 267 (W) 541 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
