Powdery snow on the roof of the dome prompted a lower wind limit; it took a while before the wind dropped low enough and nearby radar traces dissipated enough to make me comfortable opening. When we did, the observers used the echelle because CorMASS is still inoperative despite much swapping of spare parts during the day; work will continue on Tuesday. Humidity and low clouds prompted closure before APOLLO could get focused, but when the humidity dropped an hour later, we were able to get on the sky and get excellent returns from the moon despite poor seeing. During this time, the wind topped the reduced limit; since we were in the dome, I was able to confirm that no snow was blowing inside, so we remained open. Third half observations with the echelle went well except for one difficulty on the remote end; the observer's computer was apparently set to use control-click as a keyboard shortcut for another purpose, so the centering offsets wouldn't go through. The observer will have to work with CU computer people to resolve the problem; for tonight, I did the centering. Minor cold-related problems cost no or very little time, including a failure of the eyelids-closed sensor which made it impossible to open or close mirror covers in automatic mode. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:47 Echelle 13(-606) 165 74 -7.4/-6.8 24 8 Clear 1.04 02:17 Echelle 68(-592) 131 45 -7.8/-9.7 22 24 ND1 2.3 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 19 16 0 226 (SW) 2916 ptly cldy snow 17:01 19 13 7 3 (N) 293 ptly cldy snow 18:01 19 11 2 7 (N) 333 ptly cldy none 19:01 19 9 12 358 (N) 299 ptly cldy none 20:01 19 11 8 312 (NW) 287 ptly cldy none 21:01 18 11 16 15 (NNE) 299 ptly cldy none 22:01 17 12 2 304 (NW) 372 mstly cldy humid 23:01 16 14 9 2 (N) 347 ptly cldy humid 00:01 17 0 14 26 (NNE) 480 mstly clr none 01:01 16 0 14 11 (N) 640 clear none 02:01 18 -2 24 17 (NNE) 320 clear none 03:01 20 -5 20 22 (NNE) 222 clear none 04:01 20 -8 26 18 (NNE) 236 clear none 05:01 20 -11 16 10 (N) 194 clear none 06:01 20 -16 13 35 (NE) 158 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
