I started my checkout around 18:00, waiting to see if a decision would be made as to what instrument to set up for 2nd half, and started having problems with the Echelle slitviewer not wanting to display images (making it difficult to use at best for science). The camera was taking the images, but they were not being transfered over to TUI (local machines) correctly. I think it was part of the problems they were having the past week with the slitviewer. After trying to resolve the problem, calling Russet and Fritz, we weren't making much headway. In the meantime I continued my checkout. The plan was to offer the UC folks 1st call on another instrument, then the 1st half observer, then PU02 program (if any targets, only 1 high priority target and it didn't rise until 5AM, the others were very low priority targets) then any leftover engineering (actually Russet had some science she could use the telescope for so I offered her the telescope after Nancy). I then discovered that DIS wouldn't work (shutter open). Russet had a quick fix to solve that problem. Then Dis slitviewer wouldn't work (I kind of anticipated this was going to happen with the Echelle slitviewer problems). Fritz got Craig involved (as I believe it was some code changes that he implemented recently, and hadn't been completely tested, that were causing the problems. Craig had the problems solved by 21:10 and were back in buisness. Things ran smoothly but focus was way off. The primary was warm and not cooling properly. I thought at first it was becuase we opened later due to the problems (actually we were open at 20:00 but I forgot to open the mirror covers when I came back down). After an hour and the primary still very warm something was not right. The cooling fans were my first (and correct guess). When we reastarted the hub it killed our cooling fans. I restarted them and the mirror started coolling in a few minutes (and focus moving along with it). Clouds closed us around 01:45 and we re-opened around 03:15. About an hour later the clouds rolled back in and I opted to close the mirror covers as a pre-emptive measure. About 04:45 I saw a couple sprinkles on the cloudcam and closed the building (I didn't feel any rain on the outer rails). There were more clouds moving our way from the West so I opted to call it for the night. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NM05 O I/S 18:30 21:15 ecam image transfer broken ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 21:25 Echelle 343(800) 63 66 16.1/18.2 123 9 ND1 1.1 22:40 Echelle 75(530) 15 51 16.3/17.0 159 13 ND1 1.1 03:25 DISSlit 15(1108) 61 68 14.6/14.3 178 13 none 1.3 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 70 41 9 258 (WSW) -- Lt.
