Around 10PM we fought some fast moving clouds off for the rest of first half. With the exception of a few instances of user error, we had no problems worth metioning first half. At the start of second half, I commanded the tertiary, M3, to NA2. However, it returned an error that the clamp could not be engaged. I attempted to correct the problem from a host session but without luck. I then called and woke up Mark Klaene for some advice. We decided on a few things that I could try since from the status words it appeared that the mirror was going to its commanded position. I then went through some of the steps to verify the pneumatics were working properly and the clamp was getting electrical signals. I was able to get M3 to rotate to several ports, NA1, TR4, BC1 and the clamp to engage properly at these positions. It was then noticed that when commanded to NA2, the tertiary was stopping at its commanded position however, this position was about 5 degrees in rotation from the TR4 port. It never occured to me that the commanded position would be wrong or corrupted! John Barentine and I then attempted to rotate the tertiary to NA2 manually, however we were missing the one piece of the instructions to do so: How to de-energize the rotation motor for M3. By the time I reached this point, it was already 0330 and clouds were covering most of the sky and it didnt seem worth waking up John Davis or Dave Woods. I therefore filed a detailed Problem Report and declared the telescope shutdown for the rest of the night. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFNVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UC01 D T/H 01:02 05:52 Tertiary would not rotate to NA2 ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 19:45 Echelle 215(761) -16 32 14.4/16.8 250 11 nd2 1.56 20:54 Echelle 44(361) 44 78 14.2/15.0 245 14 clear 0.75 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 65 50 13 248 (WSW) mstly clr none 17:01 63 46 18 269 (W) mstly clr none 18:01 63 47 18 245 (WSW) mstly clr none 19:01 59 44 15 268 (W) clear none 20:01 58 45 13 240 (WSW) clear none 21:01 58 44 10 254 (WSW) clear none 22:01 57 43 11 261 (W) prtly cldy none 23:01 57 41 12 261 (W) prtly cldy none 00:01 56 40 12 263 (W) prtly cldy none 01:01 54 41 7 258 (WSW) prtly cldy none 02:01 55 42 9 280 (W) clear none 03:01 54 40 12 277 (W) mstly cldy none 04:01 53 41 11 268 (W) prtly cldy none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
