As soon as we focused and moved to the comet, clouds attacked. After a few minutes, the clouds retreated to lurk menacingly on the western horizon. There they waited, cracking their cloudy knuckles, until ten minutes before impact, when they moved in again. Our images of the impact were badly degraded by clouds, but we did obtain some exciting data. After the comet set, we went on to some other planetary work. The observers were using a subframe for the brighter planets in order to reduce the minimum exposure time, and when they tried to return to the full frame the images were badly messed up. I reset the instrument controller and restarted the software, and that cleared up the problem. We continued to do more planetary stuff, with various sizes of subframes, but when the observers tried to return to full frame for morning darks, the instrument needed to be reset once again. That cost no sky time. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFNVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NM01 N I/S 01:41 02:06 NIC needed reset ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 21:03 NICFPS -250(1897) 107 60 20.2/22.0 263 11 J 0.75 21:05 NA2gdr 2354(39354) 108 60 20.1/21.9 263 7 R 0.82 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 76 30 9 258 (WSW) 644 mstly clr none 17:01 76 29 4 277 (W) 639 mstly clr none 18:01 78 29 11 259 (W) 612 mstly clr none 19:01 75 27 14 264 (W) 595 clear none 20:01 71 24 10 265 (W) 537 mstly clr none 21:01 68 23 11 273 (W) 567 mstly clr none 22:01 68 24 16 240 (WSW) 645 clear none 23:01 66 24 17 256 (WSW) 598 mstly clr none 00:01 65 24 10 285 (WNW) 680 mstly clr none 01:01 65 24 1 339 (NNW) 1011 clear none 03:03 66 15 17 11 (N) 547 clear none 04:03 65 15 10 2 (N) 499 clear none 05:03 64 15 21 25 (NNE) 682 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
