The problem was quickly resolved and didn't cost us any time. I found the hallway stop button to be flaky *again*, causing much running up and down stars looking for the stop button I "forgot" to release. We opened to cool at 20:35 after Tomo and Masafumi's cals were taken. While focusing the telescope, Craig and I were somewhat alarmed at the large initial focus value for the NA2 guider (> -10000). I did a gmech remap in hopes of helping the situation and at first it appeared not to have worked... but when the observers slewed to their first target (and a collimation update occurred), I immediately had to refocus just the guider, arriving at a new focus value of ~ -2500. What's going on here? Once observing, no further problems were encountered for the remainder of the night. The handoff at 01:00 was virtually instantaneous, and we continued DIS spectroscopy under solidly subarcsecond conditions until twilight. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFNVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:41 DISslit 50(1562) 197 76 15.6/17.3 256 17 - 0.96 21:07 NA2gdr -10591(28508)218 73 15.0/16.2 254 11 R 0.67 21:26 NA2gdr -2612(22487)216 66 15.4/15.9 262 15 R 0.60 01:07 DISslit 25(1394) 206 77 13.9/14.0 295 14 - 1.15 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 69 23 23 252 (WSW) 637 Clear none 17:01 66 20 16 261 (W) 564 Clear none 18:01 68 22 16 249 (WSW) 557 Clear none 19:01 64 17 20 271 (W) 511 Clear none 20:01 60 18 21 232 (SW) 584 Clear none 21:01 59 15 10 256 (WSW) 504 Clear none 22:01 59 16 14 260 (W) 574 Clear none 23:01 58 17 7 270 (W) 565 Clear none 00:01 58 17 12 285 (WNW) 552 Clear none 01:01 58 14 13 291 (WNW) 553 Clear none 02:01 56 14 14 294 (WNW) 607 Clear none 03:01 56 17 20 296 (WNW) 633 Clear none 04:01 54 18 7 306 (NW) 635 Clear none 05:01 54 18 10 274 (W) 651 Clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
