The system moved out of here around 20:00 but the humidity was still too high to open until 22:00. At 01:00 the 2nd half observer took over. They wanted the 5 arc sec slit (and different gratings) plus I wanted to check the focus since the temps had been all over the place tonight. When I commanded the 5 arc sec slit from TUI, it put the empty hole in instead of the 5 arc sec slit. I commanded it back to the 1.5 arc sec slit and it "appeared" to put that one in place, but I wasn't sure. So I commanded the 1.2 arc sec with bar, nope. Didn't see the bar. Tried the open position and it put the 1.2 arc sec w/bar slit in. Did a slitmask home. Looked good on the 1.5, commanded the 1.2 w/bar and that looked OK. Commanded the 5 arc sec slit and it looked like the empty slot again! I commanded it back to the bar, and it wasn't there. I then went upstairs to see what was going on mechanically and the wheel felt tight (in place correctly, not slipping) and a slit was positioned correctly in the slot. I re-homed the mask, E1 was in place. Then commanded it to move the 5.0 arc sec slit which it appeard to do correctly. I went downstairs and took a slitview image and the 5 arc sec slit was in place (the slit was much larger than the 1.5 arc sec). I didn't want to waste anymore time diagnosinig this problem when I had a observer waiting, so I focused and then let them have the telescope. The day staff may want to check that the wheel is indeed in correctly. DIS exhibited a strange noise pattern (step pattern) during one of the observers exposures.
