We had a nice handover at 01:00 and I did a check of the focus before handing it over to the 2nd half observer. When he did his slew at 01:32 the telescope azimuth started acting up. It said it finsihed the slew but the AZ showed a Stop Switch and the telescope 1) had not ended up where it was supposed to in AZ (it was of by 10s of degrees) and 2) it was not tracking either (or incorrectly if it was at all). I noticed the problem about a minute or so later and alerted the observer that there had been a problem. I stoped the drives (and started to record relevant info for the problem report) and went up to check if we had hit one of the building collision switches (negative). Everything looked fine on the intermediate level (stop switches, AZ controller power, etc). I came back down and re-initialized the drives and did a test slew to 0,20. The slew worked fine. I then issued a slew with the tcc again and this one failed. I stopped the drives again and went up to clean the drive surfaces (they were not dirty) just in case, tried again and still no dice. I called Jon Davis and we decided to call it a night. He would be up to the site in the early morning. PT was submitted No Science was taken during the 2nd half so I declared it all a loss. Worked on web pages 2nd half. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFNVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UC05 O T/H 01:32 --:-- AZ drive would not slew properly ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:20 DISslit -125(1268) 42 74 10.9/14.4 22 7 none 1.0 20:21 NA2gdr -2751(20248) 41 74 10.8/14.5 18 6 R 0.75 01:06 DISslit -50(1226) 254 64 11.6/11.3 90 7 none 0.86 01:11 NA2gdr -1359(21640) 254 63 11.4/11.3 91 7 R 0.60 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 59 6 8 262 (W) 486 Clear none 17:01 58 6 11 264 (W) 510 Clear none 18:01 61 7 16 289 (WNW) 471 Clear none 19:01 56 4 10 302 (WNW) 571 Clear none 20:01 53 6 1 336 (NNW) 702 Clear none 21:01 53 6 7 48 (NE) 522 Clear none 22:01 54 5 3 38 (NE) 699 Clear none 23:01 54 6 5 0 (N) 737 Clear none 00:01 53 6 4 89 (E) 744 Clear none 01:01 53 5 6 90 (E) 679 Clear none 02:01 53 8 6 86 (E) 645 Clear none 03:01 44 29 22 70 (ENE) 739 Clear none 04:01 43 32 23 73 (ENE) 891 Clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
