We did not experience the same problems with dust levels tonight. At 2330, it was noticed that the telescope temperatures had been flat lined since afternoon I called Craig who was able to restart them. No other problems to note. 2nd half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan Weather second half remained clear with good seeing. Unfortunately, the echelle did not care to behave. One test image was taken that was apparently successful (okay, it was messed up, but we think that was user error), but after that nothing worked right. Images weren't read out, images that did read out didn't look as they should, and we were getting repeated serious errors from the ICC. After about an hour of struggling with this, I offered to trade some of tomorrow night's engineering time with the echelle observer, and I would do engineering for the remainder of tonight. I started with the Shack-Hartmann and did a moderate-sized collimation adjustment. Then I switched to DIS and checked focus for the slitviewer versus the red and blue detectors. There is some discrepancy, so the instrument collimation may need adjustment. Next I did a pointing model, since several observers lately have mentioned poor tracking at high altitudes. There were some complications both in taking the pointing model and in reducing it, so some work will be needed to track down the sources of these problems. Lastly I switched to SPIcam to check the scattered light and vignetting from the NA2 baffle, according to a prescription we got back in December. I got about halfway through the prescription before twilight struck. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFNVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UW12 E I/H 01:00 02:15 Multiple Ech readout errors ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:08 dis-slit -25(1160) 191 77 8.8/9.7 266 13 - 1.10 20:17 NA2gdr* -10608(22491) 199 75 9.0/9.7 242 17 R+nd2 0.80 01:13 Echelle 25(388) 117 49 7.7/7.6 282 11 ND2 1.39 02:43 S-H -100(1713) 11 61 7.8/7.3 295 17 - 1.0 03:19 DISslit -25(1079) 137 61 7.2/7.0 298 23 - 0.98 03:32 DIS(red) 25(1118) 143 63 7.1/7.0 301 16 - 1.08 03:33 DIS(blue) 0(1093) 143 63 7.1/6.9 303 24 - 1.10 03:37 DISslit -25(1063) 145 63 7.1/6.8 303 23 - 0.98 05:01 SPIcam 25(1266) 159 56 5.8/6.4 289 20 V 1.16 * The zeropoint for this instrument was adjusted after this measurement ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 57 11 28 243 (WSW) 1905 clear none 17:01 54 7 13 267 (W) 1911 clear none 18:01 55 8 21 251 (WSW) 1834 clear none 19:01 51 2 19 258 (WSW) 1703 clear none 20:01 48 3 15 263 (W) 1499 clear none 21:01 48 4 9 265 (W) 1652 clear none 22:01 47 4 9 272 (W) 1745 clear none 23:01 47 3 11 269 (W) 1670 clear none 00:01 47 3 15 267 (W) 1985 clear none 01:01 46 3 16 277 (W) 2127 clear none 02:01 46 4 12 298 (WNW) 2072 clear none 03:01 46 2 13 283 (WNW) 2127 clear none 04:01 44 3 24 292 (WNW) 2053 clear none 05:01 43 3 19 290 (WNW) 2064 clear none 06:01 43 4 19 289 (WNW) 1998 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
