Seeing was poor for a while when the wind shifted east, but for most of the night it was moderate to excellent. Everything worked perfectly. The only oddity was that the telescope's focus behavior was nearly the exact opposite of what I would have expected, starting high and then dipping well into negative numbers before settling to equilibrium slightly below zero. This was probably because daytime temperatures were quite warm and we had limited cooling before opening the telescope (fans were on, but the louvers were closed for calibrations, limiting airflow). Most of tonight's targets were extended, but on standard stars we determined that the spectrum appeared reasonably focused when the slitviewer was in focus. It appears that an offset between slitviewer and instrument focus is no longer necessary. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFNVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:43 DISslit 200(1382) 74 39 5.0/6.9 333 3 - 1.10 18:52 NA2gdr -3000(28000) 57 35 5.2/6.8 358 7 R 0.95 21:31 DISslit -125(825) 92 75 3.5/4.2 10 6 - 0.85 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 43 27 5 263 (W) 653 clear none 17:01 40 27 3 244 (WSW) 548 clear none 18:01 41 18 7 331 (NNW) 475 clear none 19:01 42 17 8 359 (N) 366 clear none 20:01 41 6 12 354 (N) 220 clear none 21:01 39 8 11 355 (N) 280 clear none 22:01 42 11 11 7 (N) 361 clear none 23:01 37 12 7 354 (N) 401 clear none 00:01 41 12 7 356 (N) 360 clear none 01:01 38 20 7 338 (NNW) 396 clear none 02:01 39 20 8 339 (NNW) 441 clear none 03:01 37 24 2 255 (WSW) 530 clear none 04:01 37 19 7 267 (W) 551 clear none 05:01 37 16 8 287 (WNW) 483 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
