About an hour later Don Lamb called requesting to preempt the Engineering on sky time to get data on GRB050319. The preemption was ok'ed and I did the instrument change as clouds started to form right above us. A Sloan Observer came in to the contol room just then to warn me that light snow flurries had just started. I quickly closed. Within a minute of closing the rain sensor went off and the Sloan Observer returned to tell me it had started to snow (as the snow was melting from her hair). By 2250 the skies were again clear and I reopened. We were able to detect the GRB in K-short after about 200s. We then proceeded to finish the rest of the prescribed sequence in the other filters. 2nd half Observing Specialist: R.McMillan After observing the GRB in multiple filters, we mounted Fastcam2. Last week's tests had indicated that even though we couldn't quite focus the guider with the secondary position adjusted for Fastcam2, we thought we could get close enough to focus for the software to guide. That proved untrue tonight, and the software refused to recognize the donuts, so I was unable to do any of the tests which called for guiding. However, I did spend several hours performing tracking and windshake tests on Alpha UMa, Polaris, Gemma, and Antares. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFNVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 23:26 nicfps 150(1226) 6 68 -2.1/-2.5 14 2 Ks 0.98 02:15 fastcam2 1500(2476)* 1.06 * The instrument zeropoint was changed after this measurement ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 29 18 11 339 (NNW) 509 mstly cldy none 17:01 32 15 7 322 (NW) 1346 mstly cldy none 18:01 30 14 20 307 (NW) 2055 mstly clr none 19:01 29 18 5 349 (NNW) 658 clear none 20:01 28 18 5 349 (NNW) 328 cloudy snow 21:01 29 16 8 310 (NW) 280 cloudy snow 22:01 27 20 11 274 (W) 366 cloudy none 23:01 29 18 12 325 (NW) 239 clear none 00:01 28 14 6 10 (N) 275 clear none 01:01 28 12 11 21 (NNE) 254 clear none 02:01 27 12 16 18 (NNE) 232 clear none 03:01 27 12 22 354 (N) 231 clear none 04:01 26 12 11 21 (NNE) 235 clear none 05:01 26 11 20 343 (NNW) 183 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
