During checkout I discovered that the echelle was not responding to commands. I tried several tricks before calling Fritz for assistance. He discovered that we could not talk to the Forth controller. John Brinkman was called to do some troubleshooting of cabling and he quickly discovered the serial line into the ICC had come loose. This fixed the problem and we were back taking images about 15 minutes after sunset. Twilight was lost to cals but no downtime was counted due to loss of only twilight time. Promptly at midnight there was a 2 hour scheduled internet outage that prevented the second half user from observing remotely. I took over and was able to collect data while the network connection was down. No time was lost. At 0615, the echelle slitviewer crashed hard and the only way to revive it was to power cycle it. The observer did blind observations for the 10 minutes it took me to bring the guider back to life. He seemed satisfied that the object had not drifted too much during the observation so no downtime was counted for this problem and it occured during twilight as well. This concludes the longest night of the year. Happy Winter Solstice everyone! ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- NM10 E I/H 16:45 17:15 Serial cable disconnected UW14 E T/S --:-- --:-- internet outtage UW14 E I/H 06:15 06:25 ecamera mac would not respond ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 18:00 Echelle -83(-336) 176 78 0.8/1.9 358 6 nd2 0.86 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 38 19 6 291 (WNW) 575 clear none 17:01 34 18 4 298 (WNW) 239 clear none 18:01 33 17 10 358 (N) 187 clear none 19:01 35 18 16 14 (NNE) 167 clear none 20:01 36 19 16 5 (N) 163 clear none 21:01 35 20 16 359 (N) 276 clear none 22:01 35 20 20 25 (NNE) 240 clear none 23:01 35 20 9 14 (NNE) 221 clear none 00:01 33 20 14 22 (NNE) 275 mstly clr cirrus 01:01 33 20 14 35 (NE) 313 mstly clr cirrus 02:01 34 21 26 24 (NNE) 197 mstly clr cirrus 03:01 34 21 28 32 (NNE) 242 mstly clr cirrus 04:01 36 17 21 29 (NNE) 123 mstly clr cirrus 05:01 37 14 12 21 (NNE) 119 clear none 06:01 40 8 8 47 (NE) 58 clear none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
