The bad seeing was odd, since we had a steady west wind -- usually favorable. However, I did notice that this wind could be felt from the parking lot, which is usually not the case for west winds that come up the mountain and flow smoothly over the ridge. So apparently something about this wind caused extra turbulence. Second half, we had some wind gusts over the limit. The PMSS was looking unhappy pointed west, so I asked the observer to find another target in the east. This made the telescope much happier, and I stayed open for a few more gusts over the limit, but once winds got up to 40 mph I insisted on closing for a while. Winds dropped, we re-opened, and of course the wind rose again, but I took my cue mostly from the telescope behavior. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEDFNVOG) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 17:56 DISslit 50(805) 239 47 3.4/4.8 250 14 - 2.3 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 43 8 9 265 (W) 777 clear none 17:01 39 10 16 243 (WSW) 743 clear none 18:01 38 13 13 273 (W) 933 clear none 19:01 39 13 17 259 (W) 1002 clear none 20:01 39 15 17 256 (WSW) 1174 clear none 21:01 39 14 19 266 (W) 938 clear none 22:01 39 12 20 273 (W) 788 clear none 23:01 40 11 28 285 (WNW) 510 clear none 00:01 40 10 23 273 (W) 413 clear none 01:01 39 10 24 280 (W) 303 clear none 02:01 39 10 28 280 (W) 237 clear wind 03:01 39 10 40 286 (WNW) 861 clear wind 04:01 39 9 26 290 (WNW) 210 clear wind 05:01 39 9 30 284 (WNW) 191 clear wind 06:01 39 9 26 281 (W) 222 clear wind Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
