Seeing was variable and in the 3 to 6 arcsec range during most of the first half of the night. The observer noticed that the telescope was 'wandering' around and her object was jumping large amounts off the slit on several occasions. Upon further investigation each occurance was right after I started the guider. A quick call to C.Loomis brought us to realize that the special mask file was missing and therefore each time I started guiding the telescope would immediately lock onto a selection of hot pixels and stray the telescope. We were able to correct the problem by recreating the mask (Thanks J.Barentine for doing this). Data collection continued as normal during the 'fix'. No other problems occured the remainder of the night. Seeing settled down to 1.5 arcsec after 2230 until 0500 when a band of clouds moved into the area. ------- FAILURE LOG ------- PROG INST FAILURE MODE TIME (SEGDFVO) TI/SHU START FINISH DESCRIPTION ----------------------------------------------------------------------- UW03 D T/S --:-- --:-- Guider mask file was missing ---------------- FOCUS LOG --------------- Air/Truss Wind Time Instrument Focus Az El Temp-C Dir MPH filt FWHM --------------------------------------------------------------------- 20:11 dis-slit -180(1169) 63 65 9.2/12.2 76 15 - 2.5 20:21 NA2gdr -1000(30000) 62 67 8.9/11.4 75 17 R 3.8 22:37 dis-slit -30(1076) 37 78 7.9/7.9 76 21 - 1.88 23:03 dis-slit -30(1070) 14 80 7.9/7.8 80 16 - 1.5 23:41 NA2gdr -1500(29500) 144 53 7.7/7.6 85 13 clear 1.4 ------------- WEATHER LOG ---------------- Wind Precip.or Time Temp F Dewp F MPH Direction Dust Sky Conditions ------------------------------------------------------------------ 16:01 60 34 5 48 (NE) 518 clear none 17:01 59 33 12 35 (NE) 440 clear none 18:01 58 34 8 44 (NE) 461 clear none 19:01 52 34 13 64 (ENE) 484 clear none 20:01 49 35 17 56 (NE) 569 clear none 21:01 47 35 17 76 (ENE) 635 clear none 22:01 47 36 16 74 (ENE) 673 clear none 23:01 46 36 16 74 (ENE) 646 clear none 00:01 46 35 12 78 (ENE) 620 clear none 01:01 46 35 11 90 (E) 701 clear none 02:01 46 35 10 77 (ENE) 732 clear none 03:01 42 34 3 74 (ENE) 630 clear none 04:01 42 34 1 355 (N) 667 clear none 05:01 44 34 6 4 (N) 714 mstly cldy none 06:01 47 34 3 2 (N) 700 prtly cldy none Note: the wind was coming from the azimuth listed.
